UW-Parkside earns Presidential service honor

For the seventh consecutive year, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside has been honored with inclusion in the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. Praising "students, faculty, and staff for their commitment to bettering their communities through service," the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) recognized UW-Parkside for serving the people and communities of southeastern Wisconsin and northeastern Illinois.

"Community-based learning is an important part of the educational experience at UW-Parkside. It's vital to get students engaged in and working for the communities we serve," said UW-Parkside Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor Fred Ebeid. "To earn a national award like this and to do so for every year it's been in existence underscores the value our faculty and our students place on improving the region we serve."

UW-Parkside was joined by the University of Wisconsin-Madison as the only two UW System campuses selected to the 2013 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. Other Wisconsin educational institutions named were Marquette University, Edgewood College of Madison, Lawrence University in Appleton, Viterbo University in La Crosse, Silver Lake College of the Holy Family in Manitowoc, Madison Media Institute, Milwaukee's Medical College of Wisconsin and Mount Mary College, Ripon College, and Waukesha County Technical College.

The President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll honors the nation's leading higher education institutions and their students, faculty, and staff for their commitment to bettering their communities through service. In the CNCS' words, "These institutions reflect the values of exemplary community service and achieve meaningful outcomes in their communities."

Citing figures showing 3.1 million college students dedicated more than 118 million hours of service across the country in 2012, Corporation for National and Community Service CEO Wendy Spencer thanked students and faculty for their enthusiasm and commitment to others.

"We congratulate the awardees and the students for their dedication to service," Spencer said. "These institutions have inspired students and faculty alike to roll up their sleeves and work alongside members of the community to solve problems and improve their neighbors' lives."
