Saturday: String Ensemble, UWP Symphony in concert

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside's "La Camerata" string ensemble and the UW-Parkside Symphony are in concert Saturday, March 16, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Featuring selections by Franz Schubert, Claude Debussy, and others, this evening of exceptional music is held in the Frances Bedford Concert Hall of the Rita Tallen Picken Regional Center for Arts and Humanities.

"Our concert will feature our string ensemble 'La Camerata' performing selections from two concertos op.1 nos. 5 and 12 by Pietro Locatelli, an influential baroque composer whose focus was in sharply contrasting harmonic elements," said conductor Alvaro Garcia. "Then the UW-Parkside Symphony performs the Symphony no. 5 by Franz Schubert, one of his most elegant symphonies."

Garcia said the program continues with a performance of Claude Debussy's "Petite Suite," which he called "a transparent arrangement filled with the musical simplicity of his original four-hands piano suite." The program closes with Alexander Borodin's march from the third act of his opera "Prince Igor." The music portrays the triumphal return of the Polovtsian Army to camp singing the praises to Khan Gzak.

Admission to this evening of great music is $8 for adults, $5 for students and seniors. For more information about this and future concert, call 262-595-2457.
