James earns 2013 Regents Teaching Excellence Award
Political Science Associate Professor Peggy James has been named a 2013 Regents Teaching Excellence Award recipient. Given to faculty and academic staff members at UW System institutions to recognize outstanding career achievement in teaching, Dr. James is the third UW-Parkside faculty member to win the award in its 21 year history. One UW-Parkside department has also received the award.
"Congratulations on your selection as a recipient of this important award," said Board of Regents President Brent Smith and Charles Pruitt, chair of the Teaching Excellence Awards Committee in a letter to Professor James. "The award pays tribute to your impressive dedication as a teacher and to your ability to inspire in your students an enthusiasm both for the subject matter and for learning in general. We sincerely appreciate your contributions to the improvement of undergraduate education in the UW System."
To be considered for the Regents Teaching Excellence Award, faculty and academic staff must excel at teaching and deeply value learning, use effective teaching methods to enhance student learning, and have a significant impact on students' intellectual development. The selection committee emphasized the award is not a "teacher of the year" honor but rather recognition of long-term career development and achievements in teaching. Two awards are given to faculty and academic staff members and one is given to an academic department or program.
Dr. James is a two-time recipient of UW-Parkside's Stella Gray Teaching Excellence Award, the university's highest teaching honor. She received the award in 2003 and 2012. In addition to her teaching duties, Dr. James has led the university's Division of Social Sciences and Professional Studies this year.
She joins English Professor Carole Vopat, who received the Regents Teaching Excellence Award in 2003, and Senior English Lecturer Patrick McGuire who won the award in 1999. The UW-Parkside Theatre Arts Department was selected as the Regents' program winner in 2009.Dr. James will be presented with the Regents Teaching Excellence Award during the Board of Regents meeting in Milwaukee Friday, June 7.
