Musical weekend features jazz, symphony, choirs
The UW-Parkside Music Department finishes spring semester with a crescendo of concerts. Pick your favorite: jazz, a symphony, and a vocal performance or experience all three in the Bedford Concert Hall of The Rita.
Thursday, May 9, 7:30 p.m., the UW-Parkside Jazz Ensemble, led by Russell Johnson, is in concert. Admission to this cool night of hot tunes is $8 for adults, $5 for students and seniors.
Saturday, May 11, 7:30 p.m., the UW-Parkside Symphony and Parkside Community Orchestra, under the direction of Alvaro Garcia, play Bedford Hall. Admission $8 for adults, $5 for students and seniors.
Sunday, May 12, 3:30 p.m., the UW-Parkside Choirs, conducted by Dr. James B. Kinchen Jr., perform in Bedford Hall. Along with medleys from "Westside Story" and "South Pacific," Kinchen said selections include gospel and spiritual songs "Glorious Everlasting," "Living in a Holy City," "The Conversion of Saul," "O Divine Redeemer," "Psalm 96," and "In His Care-O." Favorites "Anthem for Spring," "Italian Street Song," "As Torrents in Summer," and "Wanting Memories" are on the playlist as are the standards "That Old Black Magic," "The Nearness of You," "Les Chansons Des Rose," and "I Carry your Heart with Me." The choirs include the University Chorale, Master Singers, Voices of Parkside, and the Vocal Jazz Ensemble.
Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students.
