Parkside Theatre’s “12th Night” honored by KCACTF
Parkside Theatre's raucous production of William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" received multiple honors from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF). Two student actors and five design members, including director Jamie Cheatham, received the organization's prestigious regional awards.
Cheatham was honored with a Certificate of Merit for Exceptional Achievement in direction for the production which had a 1930s Golden Age of Hollywood setting complete with the Chapin-esque fool Feste. Cheatham also composed original jazz-age music for the production with lyrics by Shakespeare. The music was arranged and performed by UW-Parkside student Josh Robinson.
Students Brenna Kempf and Ethan Hall received Irene Ryan Acting Award nominations. Kempf played the gender-bending roles of Viola and Cesario and Hall portrayed a Valentino-like Duke Orsino.
Also honored with Certificates of Merit for Exceptional Achievement were students Katlin Kobernick for make-up design and execution and Chris Payne for lighting design as were staff members Misti Bradford for costume design and scene designer Jody Sekas. Each contributed to the play's "black and white" opening act and the Technicolor brilliance of Act Two.
"The black-and-white 'effect' took so much coordination," Cheatham said. "Plants were sprayed gray, drinkable gray liquid had to be devised, a makeup crew team sprayed actors' hands, feet and torsos backstage every night. It was really heartening to see so many of my design team recognized for such a terrific collaborative" accomplishment.
Citing the play's "tremendous critical success," Dr. Dean Yohnk, Theatre Arts professor and Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, said KCACTF's recognition is "another indication of the exceptional work that our entire theatre company continues to do in offering the best in collegiate theatre at UW-Parkside."
Along with Kempf and Hall, the cast included Rachel Sandlin as Olivia, Alex Metalsky as Feste, Michael Zimmermann as Malvolio, Kenjamin Lafayette as Sir Toby Belch, Laura Chartrand as Maria, Michael Dalberg as Sir Andrew, Michael Pfeiffer as Sebastian, Hayley Cotton as Antonia, and Ben Carlstein, Kevin Duffy, Olivia Kraus, Joe Romanak, Robin Feltman, and Bethanne Duffy. In addition to Kobernick, Payne, Bradford, and Sekas, director Jamie Cheatham's crew included Laura Arnold, Brittany Boeche, Karla Chavez, Michael Clickner, Darice Damata-Geiger, David Gasperetti, Elliot Mahoney, Abby Miller, Christine Smith, Lindsey Talbot, Will Teoh, Shanna Theiste, Antonio Torrez, and Chip Weinke.Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" was presented for seven performances May 3-11, 2013, in the Main Stage Theatre of the Rita Tallent Picken Regional Center for Arts and Humanities.
