Astoria, Zanowski at Citizens Climate Lobby Conf.
UW-Parkside's Political Science and Law Assistant Professor Ross Astoria and Student Support Services Director Chris Zanowski were in Washington, D.C., this week for the 4th Citizens Climate Lobby (CCL) international conference. They were among a group of 35 Wisconsin members from eight local chapters who joined hundreds of national CCL members seeking to generate solutions to stabilize the Earth's climate.
While in the capital June 23-25, Astoria, Zanowski, and CCL membership heard from renowned climate scientist Dr. James Hansen. He recently retired from NASA to devote more time to advocate on the climate issue.Attendees spent the final day of the conference visiting congressional offices to build support for a revenue-neutral carbon tax. Proceeds from the tax would be returned to households, an approach CCL said is backed by figures from across the political spectrum from conservatives like former Secretary of State George Shultz and Reagan economic advisor Art Laffer to liberals including former Vice President Al Gore and former World Bank Chief Economist Joseph Stiglitz.
