New scholarship builds financial planning careers

UW-Parkside/Financial Service Group Scholarship builds financial planning careers

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside recently received funding from Financial Service Group and its president, UW-Parkside alumnus Michael Haubrich along with his wife, Tamala Witt, to establish a Financial Planning Career Development Scholarship. Financial Service Group has made a five-year commitment to provide a $2,000 scholarship each year to students who express an interest in the financial planning field.

"We want to get a buzz going with students at UW-Parkside that financial planning is a viable and exciting career opportunity for those with diverse skills," Haubrich said.

Like many industries, financial planning firms face a talent shortage due to the unique skill set required. Successful financial planners combine solid technical skills with strong communication and relationship building abilities. They must connect with people, not just numbers.

In addition to the scholarship, Financial Service Group's long term vision is to work with faculty in the UW-Parkside School of Business and Technology to develop a curriculum of classes needed for students wishing to attain the Certified Financial Planning designation.

One requirement of the scholarship provides students with a lesson in personal philanthropy. Recipients will be asked to commit to starting their own scholarship within 20 years of their graduation.

"This is a unique but growing trend among donors," said Dr. Lenny Klaver, UW-Parkside's vice chancellor for University Relations and Advancement. "It will allow the recipient to remain aware of what this scholarship opportunity means in the long run and provides a way to stay involved after graduation and success are achieved."

Financial Service Group regularly encourages clients to consider philanthropy as an objective in their estate and financial planning. Haubrich called the UW-Parkside Financial Planning Career Development Scholarship an example of the flexibility available through customized philanthropic planning.

"We can see how the scholarship evolves over the next five years and then determine if we establish an endowment, expand the number of scholarships, or pursue another strategy," said Haubrich.

The Financial Service Group's first UW-Parkside Financial Planning Career Development Scholarship will be awarded prior to the start of the 2006-2007 academic year in September 2006.
