Eichner, RCB feature “La Mancha” & Berlin Sunday

UW-Parkside Music Professor Mark Eichner and the Racine Concert Band (RCB) continue their 89th season of free concerts Sunday, July 15, at the Racine Zoo. The 7:30 p.m. performance features music from Broadway's "Man of La Mancha," favorites from Irving Berlin, marches by John Philip Sousa among others and is highlighted by solo performances by trumpeter Eric Weiss and Rick Sunier on euphonium.

Weiss, a graduate of UW-Parkside and Cardinal Stritch, performs John Edmondson's "Essay in Blue," a slow bluesy theme followed by an upbeat jazz waltz. Weiss is a music educator for Racine Unified who performs regularly in the RCB, the Parkside Reunion Big Band, and Belle City Brassworks.

Sunier performs "Mirror Lake" by Edward Montgomery. An RCB member since 2002, Sunier also performs in the UW-Parkside Community Band, Belle City Brassworks, the Kenosha Pops Concert Band, and recently performed in the Racine Theater Guild production of "Chicago."  

The program also features Henry Cowell's "Old American Country Set," Rossini's overture to "The Silken Ladder," and Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg's joyous "Wedding Day at Troldhaugen." Music from Mitch Leigh's 1965 Broadway smash "Man of La Mancha" and marches by Davide Della Cese, Zo Elliot, Pierre Leemans, and John Philip Sousa are showcased. A medley of Irving Berlin favorites serves as the concert's finale.

Don Rosen from 92.1 Lite Rock and WRJN is the Master of Ceremonies.

The concert takes place at the Kiwanis Amphitheater on the east side of the zoo grounds. The zoo opens for free admission to the concert at 6:30 p.m. A courtesy cart for those needing assistance is available at the Walton St. and Augusta St. gates at 6:30 p.m., and after the concert. There is no fixed seating at the concert venue. The audience is encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.
