UW-Parkside Student Support Services' TRIO Summer Bridge began its four-week program for new incoming first-year college students the week of July 16. In the program, students start reading and composition classes and participate in The Parkside Experience: College Success and Life Skills Seminars.

Student Support Services Director Chris Zanowski said Summer Bridge courses are linked with integrating assignments, an integrating theme, extended instructor time with students, service learning, and academic advising. Zanowski oversees the program with Amy Castelic and Alfredo Sandoval Flores serving as program advisors. The TRIO trio teach the College Success and Life Skills Seminars and Associate English Lecturer Nicole Tryling teaches reading and composition classes. Students in the Summer Bridge program are all first-generation college students.

After just one week on campus, TRIO Summer Bridge students are calling the program a great experience. David Rivera, a new student from Racine who currently is exploring his options for a major, said: "I chose to participate in the SSS Summer Bridge because it gets me started on my classes early. I get to know how college classes are and get to know new people. Summer Bridge is going great! I can keep up with the classes, so that's good. I've already met a couple new friends. We used the New York Times in the classroom. We got to know the campus and resources, and we got to learn about the history of Parkside ? where it has been and how it is now. In composition class, we are reading short essays and writing summaries and questions we have about the readings."

Summer Bridge student Justin Aranda said, "The bridge program is helping me focus on putting time aside to do homework. I like the small class and everyone is very helpful."

Angelica Veronica added, "Summer Bridge is a very cool experience so far."

Rivera, Aranda, and Veronica are now on campus along with Summer Bridge students Rene Acosta, Alicia Berreto, Erica Cruz, Erik Faz, Brianna Gaines, Maxwell Melendrez, Blanca Munoz, Antoine Murry, ShreyKumar Patel, Christian Rocha, Amir Taha, Yer Vang, and Bee Xiong

The Student Support Services TRIO Summer Bridge program continues through Aug. 9.
