Video: “Cultivating Community One Seed at a Time”

"Students who engage in community-based learning or service learning are more likely to remain in college. [Research] also shows that students from the STEM disciplines who engage in community-based learning in their science-related classes are more likely to stay in the science disciplines."

This statement by UW-Parkside Director of Community Based Scholarship and Nonprofit Development Debra Karp, opens the video "Cultivating Community One Seed at a Time: The Importance of Service Learning" which can be viewed on YouTube.

Also featuring UW-Parkside faculty members Patricia Cleary, Penny Lyter, and Dave Rogers, and adjunct instructor Stefanie Strauss-Thompkins, the video was made to inspire students—and faculty—in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines to get involved with community-based learning (CBL).  

UW-Parkside partnered with Gateway Technical College, UW-Extension, and the Racine/Kenosha Community Action Agency to engage science students in community food production and nutrition education. More than 230 students took CBL courses working on projects to support community gardens or assist nutrition educators in providing low income and other individuals with information about healthy nutrition options and food preparation.

The video was produced by AVA Productions and funded by the Midwest Campus Compact Citizen Scientist Initiative.
