The University of Wisconsin-Parkside's popular Arts Alive! series presents a season that begins with swing, ends with Shakespeare and in between is filled with singing, dancing, holiday cheer, and magic. Season and single show tickets covering performances by the swing band 5 by Design, magician Bill Blagg, the UW-Parkside Master Singers, Ballet Folklorica Mexico, and The Bard are now on sale.

"What I like most about this year's series is the variety," said Arts Alive! series director Stephanie Sirovatka-Marshall. "There's wonderful music with 5XD, Dr. Kinchen and the Master Singers, and Duo Sonidos. There's dancing with Ballet Folklorico, and the magic with Bill Blagg--I don't know if he'll make it snow inside the building this year but I do know that it's going to be a fun show."

The series opens Thursday, Sept. 27, at 7:30 p.m. with 5 By Design's Club Swing. This fast-paced show--after all we are talking swing here--celebrates the songs, events, and stars who defined American popular culture when Swing was King.

Saturday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m. prepare to be amazed by illusionist Bill Blagg. Called "simply amazing" by the Chicago Tribune, Blagg walks through steel, brings ordinary objects to life, makes audience volunteers levitate while others vanish in the blink of an eye. Tickets for this show will also disappear.

Celebrate the holidays with two performances of the "Nguzo Saba Suite: A Celebration of Kwanzaa." Commissioned by Dr. James B. Kinchen Jr. and the university's choirs and performed magnificently by the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Master Singers, a community chorus, this musical event is presented Sunday, Dec. 2, at 3:30 p.m. and Monday, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the acoustically perfect Frances Bedford Concert Hall.

The 2013 portion of the series opens Friday, Feb. 8, at 7:30 p.m. with the high energy of Ballet Folklorico Mexico. This dance extravaganza features all manner of movement from ritual dances you may never have seen before to the familiar Mexican Hat Dance. Don't be surprised to find yourself wanting to join in!

The Thursday, March 21, 7:30 p.m. performance of Duo Sonidos brings together the virtuoso talents of violinist William Knuth and guitarist Adam Levin. This chamber music duo was awarded First Prize at the 2010 Luys Milan International Chamber Music Competition in Valencia, Spain, and has performed throughout the United States and Europe. Take this opportunity to see them live.

The series closes Friday, May 3, at 7:30 p.m. with Parkside Theatre's lavish production of "Twelfth Night." The Bard's comedy is an amalgam of drink, dance, and general self-indulgence. The subtitle "What You Will" implies that the audience is also involved in the merry spirit of in the play.

Season tickets and tickets for individual performances are now on sale. Visit the UW-Parkside web site www.uwp.edu keyword Tickets, call 262-595-2307, or purchase tickets at the Concierge Desk at the UW-Parkside Student Center located at 900 Wood Road in Kenosha.
