Monday, Sept. 17 Lecture: "Sorceresses & Suffrage”

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside Women's, Gender, and Sexualities Lecture Series returns Monday, Sept. 17, with a look at women, voting, and the Merry Olde Land of Oz. The series starts with Associate English Professor Mary Lenard's address "Sorceresses and Suffrage: Women, Power, and Politics in L. Frank Baum's Land of Oz."

The 60-minute program begins at noon in the Overlook Lounge on the second floor of the Library.

"I will be speaking about Baum's own relationship with the women's suffrage movement, and how that influenced his portrayals of powerful women in the Oz books," Professor Lenard said.

Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" was the first book in a series of 14 popular children's books published between 1900 and 1920. They are notable for featuring spunky girls and powerful women as their most important characters with the author's writing clearly influenced by his politically active wife Maud and her mother, Matilda Joslyn Gage, a major leader in the American women's suffrage movement.      

Subsequent lectures take place Oct. 22 featuring UW-Parkside Economics Professor Farida Kahn, Nov. 19 with English Professor Maria Martinez, Feb. 18 with English Professor Dana Oswald, March 18 with English Professor Gail Gonzalez, and April 15 with English Professor Quinn Ryshkus. Each lecture focuses on faculty members' current research.

Admission is free and refreshments are provided.
