UW-Parkside student advances to a new career

After serving as an intern with University Advancement at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside for nearly a year, Adam Nelson is now venturing out into the community, utilizing his degree in Computer Science. He is newly employed as the web developer at Jockey International's Kenosha headquarters.

As an intern, he gained experience in database and web development.

"I learned how University Advancement works?and the people were fantastic!" he commented.

Although he had received more than one job offer, Nelson choose Jockey based on his own desires.  

"This job is more aligned with what I wanted to do and it's in town, which is nice."

His advice to students soon entering the work force: Keep putting yourself out there! He encourages students to utilize all the resources the university offers?job sites, workshops, and networking?all provide students with the skills they need to prosper in their fields of study.

"It's OK to depend on others for assistance. It gives you a good insight," he said.

Nelson looks back fondly on his time at UW-Parkside.

"I appreciated the class and student body size. It allowed faculty to focus more on individual students," Nelson said.

He also highlighted the importance of working as part of a team, which is required of him at Jockey. The group work he participated in at UW-Parkside allowed him to have this upper-hand.  

With the education he received from UW-Parkside and the experience he gained with University Advancement, Nelson demonstrates how, despite economic conditions, graduates can?and do?find careers that not only benefit them, but their communities as well.
