The 2012 presidential election spotlight focused on southeast Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Friday afternoon during a visit by Vice President Joe Biden. Speaking at the De Simone Gymnasium in the university's Sports & Activity Center, Biden addressed an enthusiastic audience of about 1,300 students and area residents.

With his visit, Biden became the first sitting U.S. vice president to visit the UW-Parkside campus.

During his 30-minute speech, Biden touched on funding for education, economic growth, the importance of investing in clear energy, and health care. Singling out a veteran in the audience, Biden stressed what he called "our sacred" responsibility to care for the men and women who fought for freedom around the world, particularly those who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan.

After spending the morning at a campaign stop at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Biden visited at a local landmark, the Mars Cheese Castle, to get the flavor of Wisconsin before coming to campus.

The vice president was preceded on the stage by Wisconsin State Representative Peter Barca. Barca and Biden were congressional colleagues when Biden was a Maryland senator and Barca represented Wisconsin's 1st District. Rod Zerban, the current 1st District Democratic congressional candidate, also spoke at the event.
