UW-Parkside students to star on Estonian media

When the viewers and listeners of Estonia's public radio and television services finalize their opinions on the U.S. presidential election, University of Wisconsin-Parkside students will have a voice in their conclusions. A dozen of our students met with Neeme Raud, the U.S. correspondent for Estonian Public Broadcasting Thursday, to talk about the Nov. 6 presidential election. The video shot here will be shown as part of a 50-minute documentary to air Nov. 12, six days after election day. The documentary will include coverage of President Obama's and Mitt Romney's visits to Milwaukee.

Raud asked students about the enthusiasm--or the seeming lack of it--for this year's vote compared to 2008.

"Four years ago there was a great deal of excitement, especially among young voters, over Obama's campaign and election. This year, there doesn't seem to be nearly that level of anticipation that people had back then. We were interested in hearing how students here felt about the election," Raud said.

Raud, and his producer Nele Kirt, were impressed by UW-Parkside students saying they were very knowledgeable and well informed. Students from Communication, Ethnic Studies, and Political Science classes met with the reporter in the Mathis Gallery. Faculty members James Kinchen and Jonathan Olsen, and Dr. Dean Yohnk, dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, were also interviewed.

Estonia is a small democratic country in the Baltic region, across the channel from Finland. It gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The crew's camera operator and director flew in from Tallinn, Estonia, the night before visiting UW-Parkside. Raud lives in New York City and Kirt in Milwaukee.
