IPED submits six paths

Editor's note: This is the first in a series of articles on the university's Educator Development Program which is set to debut in fall semester 2013.  

UW-Parkside's Educator Development (Teacher Prep) Program took a significant step forward late in December with the filing of license pathways with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI). Pathways are the curriculum, clinical guidelines (for student teaching), and assessment protocol which will lead to teacher licensing.

Pathways were filed for majors in mathematics, chemistry, biology, sociology, political science, and English-language arts. Graduates of these new teaching pathways will be able to teach students in grades 6-12.

The DPI reviews all education programs taught in the state to ensure they meet state criteria. Review of the submitted curriculum takes 12 weeks.

The newly redesigned UW-Parkside program will be built on students working toward their major plus the new education curriculum designed to teach the skills educators are expected to bring to the middle school and high school classrooms. The educator development program begins in fall semester 2013.

The new Educator Development Program has been established under the Institute of Professional Educator Development (IPED, a UW System organizational term for the group) which has worked the past 18 months to design the program. IPED was charged with designing an educator development program that meets the needs of students in the 21st century. This collaborative effort of UW-Parkside faculty, community educators, and business and civic leaders reinforces the university's mission as a regional partner.

Additional majors will be submitted for the educator development program. These programs will be announced by IPED as they are submitted for DPI approval.
