Cultures collide at Worldfest 2013 March 11-15

Worldfest Week March 11-15. Join the celebration!

It's that time of year again! The time when international colors decorate Main Place as UW-Parkside celebrates Worldfest 2013 March 11-15.

Kicking off the week's events Monday March 11, at 11:30 a.m. is the ceremonial flag procession featuring standards from all over the world. Starting from the Student Center Bridge, the procession will find its way to Main Place where several musical and dance performances will be held.

Sponsored by the Parkside International Club (PIC), Patrick Wong, the club's new president, expressed his excitement for the upcoming events.

"This is my first semester as PIC president. I've been working very hard helping put these events together," Wong said. "We will be having lots of events featuring students and professors alike, sharing their experiences from different cultures."

March 12, the student presentation "Can There Be a Buddhist Economics in Thailand?" is at 11 a.m. and a lecture about German culture led by a Associate Modern Languages Lecturer Susan Blust is at noon. Afterward, study abroad students will share their experiences in Cuba during "Welcome to Cuba: Forbidden Island Study Abroad 2012" at 1:30 p.m. These events are in the Student Center Cinema.

The annual World Bazaar is March 13, as merchants from cultures all over the world present goods, artifacts, and crafts from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Main Place. Flamenco dancing and guitar add to the festivities. From 3:30 to 5 p.m. the same day, the fest features a lecture about Japanese craft brewing in the Student Center Oak Room where students, 21 years or older with ID, can receive a free tasting and learn about the art of beer making in Japan. Directly following this event, a lecture called "Social Norms" is presented by Florine Ndakuya.

Thursday, March 14, find yourself in the Student Center Oak Room as three lectures and presentations by UW-Parkside students should peak your interest. Starting at 2 p.m., Lorena Muraroto, an international student from Brazil, presents her experiences during her first year at Parkside and the culture of Brazil. A program on the Chinese Zodiac follows at 3 p.m. with predictions for the Year of the Tiger. And we'll get a glimpse inside the true meaning of "Gangnam Style" at 4 pm.

The final and most popular event, the World Cuisine Dinner, concludes the week's festivities Friday, March 15, at 6 p.m. Attendees are treated to different cultural dishes as well as a slew of entertainment and performances in the Student Center Ballroom including dances from the Ukraine, Spain, and Africa.

To provide a head count in time for the event, tickets for the dinner are only sold through Friday, March 8. Community members can purchase a ticket for $25, student tickets are $10 with UW-Parkside ID.
