The Winter 2013 Commencement of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, in the De Simone Gymnasium of the Sports & Activity Center.
More than 330 students were eligible to participate in the ceremony, marking one of the largest winter commencement classes in the history of the university.
"Commencement symbolizes the amazing impact the University of Wisconsin-Parkside has on the lives of our students and on the life of our community," said Provost and Vice Chancellor Fred Ebeid.
Will Allen, Growing Power Inc.
This year's guest speaker was Will Allen, who describes his title as farmer, founder and CEO of Growing Power Inc. - a nonprofit center for urban agriculture training in Milwaukee. Growing Power employs a staff of 99 and is involved with projects and outreach programs across the United States and throughout the world. In 2008, Allen was awarded the John D. and Katherine T. MacArthur Foundation "Genius Grant" and named a MacArthur Fellow - only the second farmer ever to be so honored.
He is also a member of the Clinton Global Initiative. In February 2010, he was one of four national spokespersons who stood on the dais with First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House to launch her "Let's Move!" initiative to reverse the epidemic of childhood obesity by 2015.
Allen was included in the 2010 Time 100 list of the world's 100 most influential persons. The 2010 list included Oprah Winfrey, Steve Jobs, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama.
During the ceremony, four graduating students received university awards. Cassandra Hughes, biological sciences; Keith Krukowski, geosciences; and Constantinos Vrakas, biological sciences, were honored as Outstanding Graduates. Jeffrey Townsend, graphic design, receive the Chancellor's Award signifying the top graduate for the winter 2013 class.
