2013 December Commencement Ceremony
In one of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside's largest winter graduations, more than 300 students walked across the stage during the commencement ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013. The ceremony celebrated many firsts; 54 percent of the graduating class were the first in their immediate family to receive a college degree. It was also the first time in UW-Parkside's history that the ceremony was streamed live online. Chancellor Ford took a picture of the graduating class from the podium and encouraged the audience to share their own pictures and comments with the hashtag #parksidegrad.
The hashtag created an interactive environment and allowed the ceremony to come alive on social media. The University of Wisconsin-Parkside's Facebook page was marked as a page to watch five times over the course of the ceremony.
Mirroring Chancellor Ford's request to share the ceremony experience online was commencement speaker Will Allen, CEO and Founder of Growing Power Inc., encouraging the graduates to stay in touch with one another. Allen said, "somewhere along the line you're going to need each other ... we need to work together and partner together."
Four outstanding graduates were recognized during the ceremony, Cassandra Hughes and Constantinos Vrakas both biological sciences graduates, Keith J. Krukowski a geosciences graduate, and Jeffery Townsend a graphic design graduate as well as the Chancellor's Award recipient.
