Members of Cub Scout Pack 249 from Saint Richard Church in Racine, Wis., found out that rocks are much more than hard things lying on the ground. UW-Parkside Geology Club members Cari Willms and Jamie Lambert along with UW-Parkside assistant professor of geosciences Dr. John Skalbeck, gave the boys a closer look at minerals and rocks, the rock cycle, plate tectonics, volcanoes, the origin and history of the Earth, and household items made from geologic materials.

Willms and Lambert helped the scouts complete requirements for their
Weblos Geology pin. The geology classroom/laboratory in Greenquist served
as an excellent venue for the event with access to mineral and rock
samples, video viewing, geologic diagrams and maps. Skalbeck’s
experience with scouting ensured that event included the traditional
snack and refreshments for the scouts and parents.
