In 1956 I discovered the University of Washington was so desperate they would accept a student with a 2.7 GPA. And that the courses in the School of Journalism were so easy, that person could work weekends shoveling pizzas for $1.25 per hour and graduate without any debt! (And not to toot my own horn but to toot his, Jerry Burke taught me to wrestle so well that I won the 1959 UW intramural championship, my only, ever, athletic achievement. Jerry won his class as well.)

I joined the Navy and married Elaine Meyers of Poulsbo in 1961. I fought the Vietnam War from the comfort of Keflavik, Iceland.

My first position in the field of journalism was managing editor of the Milwaukie Review in Milwaukie (sic) Oregon. In our off-hours Elaine and I played in the jug band Swamp Gas which you would have heard of if you attended a certain peculiar meeting of the Minnehaha Grange in about 1965.

From Oregon, we moved to Tacoma where I wrote for The News Tribune and our children Charlotte (1967) and Neil (1971) were born. In our spare time we purchased and restored an abandoned fire station, Engine House No. 9a pretty good pub to this day.

(I think I still hold the record for the fastest ascent by stairs of the County-City Building. You can ask Fred Fleming.)

After quitting The Tribune, in a desperate bid to find myself I took a course in boat building at Bates Vocational School while Elaine and I searched for a real home. (We had sold our home near the Narrows and were living upstairs in the Engine House.)

Elaine chose Guemes Island as a better place to raise the kids. We tacked a note on the bulletin board at the ferry landing asking about property and found ourselves moving there.

I set up a business modifying yacht interiors in Anacortes. Elaine joined what became North Island Boat Company as a refinisher.

Elaine was raised on the Poulsbo mud flats and was determined to have an old farmhouse near the water. There were none available in our price range on Guemes so we advertised and Skagit County sold us a 1912 house in the heart of Mt. Vernon for $1. We moved it to Guemes via the north fork of the Skagit River, the Swinomish Channel and Padilla Bay. This provided months of entertainment for the residents of Guemes.

It seems we were born entertainers as our next adventure proved.

Guemes Islands last store was bought for a ferry parking lot in the 1970s. We thought it would be nice to continue the tradition of having a store at the Landing. We naively applied for a zone change on some land we had and promptly ran into a firestorm of hearings, re-hearings, missing tape recordings, appeals and re-appeals that lasted five years. Andersons General Store* opened in 1998 but we were tired, five years older and didnt have much energy left to actually run the place. Then a miracle happened. Our son (now a public defender in Vancouver) mentioned to our daughter that we could use some help. She talked her husband, David Clifton, into moving to Guemes to run the store (giving up real jobs to do it). Then as a bonus they delivered a grandson, Shaw (2002).

I have not given up journalism. The Guemes Island Evening Star has been published 10 times per year for the past 12 years.

Marlene (Archer) Snyder

Shortly after graduation I married my high school sweetheart, Skip
Poyfair, a 1954 grad from Vancouver High School.  We had 5 children - 2
boys and 3 girls.  We moved to Arvada, CO in 1970 and Skip died in 1978.
I remarried in 1980 and that marriage ended in divorce in 1986.

I went to work after getting my children through college (finally) and
met my husband of 9 years, Bernie Snyder.  We both retired from Denver's
Regional Transportation District, Bernie as the Labor Relations Manager
and I was the Worker's Compensation Coordinator.  Bernie has 2 children,
a son and daughter and 4 granddaughters.  I  have 21 grandchildren and 6
great-grandchildren.

We love being retired!  We are very active in our church, we love to fish
in the beautiful Rocky Mountains, we love to read, attend many activities
involving our grandchildren and we absolutely love to travel.  With
children in AZ, CA, UT, and Okinawa, we have many opportunities to see
this great country.  We have enjoyed several cruises and many other
wonderful sights and places.

Though I am unable to attend the Reunion, I want to thank each of you for
your time and dedication to what I am sure will be a most successful
event.  It has been fun reading about our grads.  Thank you!

After graduation I was in the U.S. Coast Guard from Sept., 1956 to Sept. 1960, which included being on the Patrol Boat (40575) that was sunk by an Unlimited Hydroplane in Lake Washington in Seattle on August 11, 1958. I went to Business College for 1 yrs. and had some odd, temporary, & seasonal jobs.  I worked in a parts warehouse for J.I. Case for about 3 years.  Then I got hired into the Fire Department in Aloha, OR in 1967.

On 9/14/68 I married Virginia Roshak. We are still happily married and about to celebrate our 38th anniversary.  Weve been blessed with two wonderful children, Randy & Nancy, who have filled our lives with much happiness.  After retiring from the Fire Department with 25 years of service in 1992, I worked a part-time job as driver for Enterprise Rent-A-Car for 8 years. I continue to volunteer with our local Meals-on-Wheels Program for the elderly & homebound.

We enjoy watching Hydroplane and car races.  We have enjoyed some nice vacations, the biggest being an Alaskan Cruise & Land Tour, which we thoroughly enjoyed.  Weve traveled in Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, & California. We have on several occasions visited Dave McFeron, (former classmate Fort Vancouver Class of 56) and his wife, Diane, in Oxnard, CA.  We also took a December Canyon Land Tour through Bryce, Zion, and Grand Canyons.  We live in a wonderful country, and I hope to have the chance to see more of it.

Jan Aust                                             (Self portrait at my sister's in Minnesota-March)

Retired from being an educator (Media Specialist) for 38 years and am still passionate about down-hill skiing, traveling, birding, photography and visiting my hot tub everyday I'm in town.

I was officially married in 2004 until annulled by the state of Oregon. My psychiatrist partner Dr. Peggy Hanley Hackenbruck and I are still a happy couple living in Portland. We chase birds around the world. In Nov. & Dec. we were with 4 other friends in Vietnam and Thailand. We have helped collect data for the Ocean Conservancy on Midway Island (1000 miles N.W. of Honolulu) and Cornell University in the northwest woods. The specialties were the Layasan Albatross and the 3 species of nw thrushes. Our travels in the last couple years have taken us to Panama, Belize, Mexico, Belgium, Cape Cod and New York. (One year I saw 10 Broadway shows.)

We finally have a grand daughter. (details later) She is 7 months old and enrolled in a formal music class. It is a wonder to watch. Education is so amazing when we support it.

Hope to see you all at the reunion.

Quick bio: (2000)
Married, widowed, 35 year long companionship with John Glathe. Worked as biofeedback therapist for 22 years. Retired April 2000. I have 4 daughters, 3 grandsons. John has 2 daughters, 1 son, 6 granddaughters. My sister Barb and her husband live in Palo Alto, They have 1 daughter and 1 son and daughter in law. Mom still lives in Vancouver, Dad died 1999.
Traveling, gardening, catching up on 22 years of unfinished projects. Cherishing the times with "the girlfriends" weekends. Some things don't change much.

Update: 2006

I didn't learn everything I needed to know in kindergarten!
For instance, there are far more serious confrontations in life than your sister breaking your crayons, or your boyfriend dumping you for another. Or that, yes it is very sad when a good friend moves to another town, but sadder still when a spouse, parent or dearly loved friend is killed, or dies from disease, or even old age. Did I know that water wouldn't always be drinkable, air breathable or food available for everyone? That children starved to death, women tortured and sold into slavery and men marched off to war, never to return. No-thank goodness, or I don't think that I could have survived.

The older I become (and I hope that continues) the more I need to know and try to understand. What a challenge to be open to and consider the multitude of beliefs and customs of our ever changing lives. The older I become the more I cherish my wonderful daughters(4) and their husbands and 3 grandsons. I cherish my husband, John, and his 3 children and 8 grandchildren. And my friends-what would I do without the love and laughter shared while gathered in front of the fireplace at the beach, or pulling weeds in each other's garden.

I didn't learn everything, but I did learn of friends. Perhaps that is the most important lesson of all. Isn't that what a reunion is all about? See you there!!

Carol

Mary Ellen (Bork) Sandberg

I was married to my first husband for 36 years when he died in 1993. We had three sons and one daughter. I retired from First Independent Bank in 1998 after working there for 22 years, starting as a Teller and finishing as a Branch Manager. After "reconnecting" with Roy Sandberg at our "40th" reunion, we were married in 2000. He and I have built a new home in Kenmore and enjoy landscaping, traveling and time spent with my four children (who are now grown) and six grandchildren.

Judy (Boyd) White
carjuwhite@centurytel.net

I was married in the fall of '56 and had 4 children, 3 boys and 1 girl.
They all live in the NW from Bend to Seattle.  I studied Art when the
youngest child entered 1st grade, my life long dream.  I divorced in
1983.   Remarried Carrol White in 1989.  We moved to Maupin, OR and
bought a place on the Deschutes River where Carrol continued running his
rafting business and we started a Bed and Breakfast Lodge.  We met many
interesting people from all over the world that stayed at our place.  It
was like traveling but staying at home.  Our Lodge grew from 5 rooms to
12 rooms, all rooms were themes of Oregon.  My oldest son was working in
Malaysia in 1996 and invited me to visit.  It was a great 2 weeks in
Malaysia and 1 week in Bali. I came home to the biggest flood on the
river since 1965.  The water only came to our door step.  We sold our
business in 2001 and retired up on the hill side and not by the river.
We have enjoyed our small town life.  On our big retirement vacation we
spent 2 months in Europe as we rarely were able to get away when we were
running our lodge.

Carrol has 4 children and with my 4 we have 14 grandchildren.  All our
children were late getting married  so there are no Great
grandchildren.  We enjoy traveling with our trailer seeing various sites
in the western states.  We raise a beautiful garden, work on projects
that always need our attention both at hoem and in the community. We
visit our grandchildren when ever we can.  I still work on my art work
and meet regularly with 2 other artists in a critique group.

My Father was Eldon Boyd our 1st principal of Hudson's Bay.  When he
left Vancouver he moved to Inglewood CA.  He was principal of
Morningside High School until he retired.  He and my Mother  took a
retirement job as "Grandparents" for a wealthy family that had lost both
their parents at a young age.  Since their children had no Grandparents,
my parents were hired to live on the property and become Grandparents to
their children. He reitired from that job when he was 83 years old.  My
Father past away 3 years ago. He loved life and all the kids that went
through the schools where he was Principal.

See you at the reunion.

BSc Reed College/Portland State University: Chemistry, minor in Biology/English Literature.  MSc University of Alberta, Canada: Physiological Pharmacology.  PhD University of Oregon: Biochemical Pharmacology.  I did a Postdoc at UCSD in biochemistry, and then taught and did research for 25 yr at the University of NM School of Medicine.  Most of this work dealt with the toxicology of cyclosporine and related drugs used to counter transplant rejection, with the mechanisms of toxicity of antibiotics, and with providing an explanation for Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome, an autoimmune disease caused by contaminated tryptophan used as an amino acid supplement.  This work was supported by NIH, NSF, the American Heart Association, the Arthritis Foundation and others.  I was chairman of the Pharmacology Department for 10 yr and am now Professor Emeritus of Pharmacology in the Neurosciences Department.  I still teach quarter time, responsible for the basic science of kinetics, antibiotics and antineoplastics for medical students. I have developed a recent fascination with the health effects of caloric restriction and am writing a book on the subject.

I'm divorced, having been married twice, and have a son who is a computer programmer in Evanston, Ill.

I am vitally interested in environmental issues and have spent much time on biological restoration of a 160 acre ranch near Magdalena, NM, where I designed and built a rammed earth structure.  I recently served a 3-yr stint on the NM Resource Advisory Council for the BLM.  My spare time is also taken up with viticulture and enology.  I make ~50 cs of chardonnay here in NM from my vineyards and have made up to 100 cs of Pinot Noir/yr in a small winery in Eugene, OR, regrettably now closed.  I am an avid traveler, backpacker and climber.  In 2005 I spent 2 months in Western Turkey, traveling the countryside and hiking the Lycian Way in a rural part of Turkey on the Aegean Coast.  In 2005 I also spent a month climbing in Ecuador, and a further month walking 150 mi on the French GR4, in Haut-Provence, from Grasse to Manosque.  This year I have spent a month in Central America, in Belize, Honduras and Guatemala, and am planning a trip in the Fall to the Upper Dolpo, returning to Nepal after having been held up by Maoists during the last trip, which was a month long trek to the N and S base camps at Katchenjunga, the third highest peak.

I've included a picture of myself on Cotopaxi, Ecuador, somewhere near 18,600 ft.

At just the weekend of the reunion, I am tentatively planning to harvest 1 ton of chardonnay grapes here in Corrales, possibly more they're looking so good this year, but rest certain that I will raise a glass to all of you at the reunion!

My Best Regards!

I enjoy spending time with Joe and our dog Bailey and family get togethers with our four children and ten grandchildren.

After Joe's retirement, we realized a dream to full time RV for two years, between houses. It was fun spending winters in the Southwest and making another trip across the country. A highlight was a private tour or the carrier, USS Yorktown in Charlestown, SC. Joe served on the ship 1956-57.

Charleston is a close second to my favorite place, Hawaii.

This year has been fun doing monthly lunches with old classmates.

Remember all the planning we did for our future career, well I am still wondering what I want to do when I grow up!

So far, I graduated from Clark College , married twice and got it right the second time. We are celebrating our 35th on Aug. 27th.  Mickey is a graduate of R.A. Long and was a super Jock there and also a graduate of Western Washington.  We raised four children, Guy, Sherri, Brett & Mike who have given us one grandson, and seven granddaughters, the youngest is three.  We, also have two great-grand daughters, one and two years, and one great-grandson nine months.  I am fortunate to have all but one granddaughter and great-grandson in Alaska living in Longview.

I spent 34 years in banking as V.P. and Manager of Washington Mutual Bank in Vancouver, Longview & Olympia, WA retiring in 2002. Ive served in many capacities in various business, community and service groups the highlight as an Honorary Commander in the Air Force at McCord Airfield.  I flew on three missions with the wing I was HC for.  I have been in Rotary for 17 years and currently serve on the City of Longview Library Boards Foundation.

The most joy I have had in life so far is seeing the world.  My husband, Mickey, and I have visited every continent except Antarctica. Ive climbed the Great Wall of China, visited the Taj Mahal for a morning sunrise and evening sunset, climbed the remains of  Machu Picchu, sailed the Amazon River 1200 miles upstream, snorkel the Great Barrier Reef, visited the Pyramids, and many more exciting places. We have over 25 World cruises under our belts.  When we arent seeing the world, we veg out in Mexico our home away from home.

I am fortunate to still have my Mom living in Longview, family, friends, and classmates, Alan Howard, Dick Hartley, and the late Jack Sommerfeld.  Life and Health have been good and I appreciate every waking day, now I only need to find out what I really want to do when I grow up!

My husband and I moved from Camano Island, WA (last reunion) to Whidbey Island, WA in 1998. I was helping a daughter in her catering business here in Langley and we liked Whidbey better anyway. However, my husband died in 2004 and my daughter decided to become the head secretary at the local middle school. So this year I sold my big house, moved a mile across town and downsized to something easier to manage on a smaller lot. I have three other children: the oldest daughter is a project manager for Boeing in Everett, a son is a computer programmer and system analyst for General Dynamics in Redmond, WA, and the youngest daughter manages a dental practice here on Whidbey. So they are all close as are 8 of the 9 grandchildren. (Oldest grandson lives in San Diego.) I stay busy with quite a bit of volunteer work, sing in the church choir, and am looking forward to a three week cruise of the the Eastern Mediterranean in late Fall. I talked to Roy and Mary Ellen briefly in the spring and they are waiting for me to call and set up a lunch date before the reunion. I'd better get busy with that. My dad is still living in Vancouver so I'll spend a few days with him before the reunion and then check into one of the nearby motels. I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone. I haven't missed a reunion yet.

Sincerely,

Patty

Hello Everyone!

Greetings from the most frequented "room" at our family's summer retreat in the wilderness of
north central British Columbia on Lake McKinley--one of God's beautiful best kept secrets.  It's
our very favorite place to be.

I'm looking forward to our FVHS/HBHS 50th Class Reunion and hope there will time to do a lot
of "catching up" with all who will be there.  We were in Australia and Fiji ten years ago and
missed the 40th Reunion.

On August 3rd, Ralph & I celebrated our 49th anniversary.  We have been blessed with a good
life and look forward to a Golden Celebration next year.  We have two daughters & spouses,
six grandchildren (3 grandsons/3 granddaughters) and became Great-Grandma & Grandpa (a
girl) in March 2005.  We love spending time with family and traveling.  We have made trips to
Sweden, Norway (3x), Mexico, Hawaii in addition to our Australia/Fiji trips.  We worked with
Job's Daughters International for about 30 years as adult volunteers and traveled throughout
the U.S during that time.  Owned and enjoyed both power and sail boats and cruised Puget
Sound and Canadian waters.   Did a little fishing along the way, too.

In 2000, we sold our diesel fuel injection repair service after nearly 30 years.  Decided last
fall our Maple Valley home of 27 years was too much for just the two of us, listed the house
January 6th, it sold in 15 days, bought a home in an over-55 gated community in Lacey, Wa
and were moved by Feb. 28th.  We're lovin' it!  Going from 2800 sq.ft. to 1575 sq.ft has created
a downsizing challenge for yours truly;  Ralph's solution, however, to downsizing is one pick-up
load from the storage unit goes to the house & one load goes to the landfill...and so it goes.....!

See you at the Reunion.

After graduation, I spent a short time at Clark College pursuing a career in engineering. I got my first job in engineering at Moore Dry Kiln Co. in Portland as a part- time draftsman while still taking classes at Clark.

I soon got married to Sharon Cooper and eventually had three children--2 boys and 1 girl. I changed jobs to work in Camas at Tidland Machine Co. and moved there. At Tidlands I did design engineering and drafting. I took various night school classes ranging from engineering to management. In 1969, I was divorced which was a low point in my life. I also changed jobs and went back to Moore Dry Kiln for a short period of time. Then I was hired at Lumber Systems Inc. I designed the largest lumber stacking system in the northwest located in Idaho.

In 1971 I remarried a wonderful woman, Jackie Davis who had a daughter. I moved to Washougal and a short time later I started my own engineering business. I named it Design Tech Inc. and had as a partner my wifes brother Fred Davis. We were lucky to land a 3 year contract to do some of the detail engineering at the Crown Zellerbach (now Georgia Pacific) expansion project. This project generated a large amount of blueprints so we started Hazel Dell Blueprint. Eventually I started East Portland Blueprint located on Airport Way. When the lumber industry dried up, I started designing houses.

I have enjoyed traveling for business and I have been to England, Venezuela, Guatemala, and Africa. Also I have seen most of the United States.

In 1999, I sold my business and retired. The next year my wife retired and we settled down to an amazingly busy life. Along the way we dabbled in real estate investments and have enjoyed the fruits of our labors.

We have a lovely home in Washougal, a house on the Surfside Golf Course in Ocean Park and enjoy our motor home, going south in the winters to Yuma, Casa Grande and other points in the state.

This December I was diagnosed with Parkinsons and to keep active I play a lot of golf at Orchard Hills where we have been members for almost 30 years. I have three grandsons now grown and look forward to more traveling and taking life as it comes.

Arthur H. Fish,

Janice and I celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary in February, 2006.  We celebrated: by going to Disney Land with our oldest girl and her family; to Washington DC for a week with our middle girl and her family; and camping with our youngest girl and her family.  We have three girls and seven Grandkids and they are the pride of our life.  Our only son died at birth.  This year our oldest grandson graduated from Northwest Nazarene University and our oldest grand daughter graduated from High School in Billings, Montana.

In March, 2003, we retired after 40 years of pastoral ministry, the last seventeen in First Church of the Nazarene, Billings, Montana..  After retirement we moved to Nampa, Idaho, where we reside now in our own home after 40 years of living in a parsonage.  (Locating in Nampa allows us to live close to our youngest girl and half way between our other two girls, one in Billings, Montana and the other in Vancouver, Washington.  Another reason for moving to Idaho is to be in the same town as Northwest Nazarene University so we would be here for our Grandkids as they come to college.)

Our greatest joys in  retirement are:  Spending time with our three girls and their families.  Working in our home and on our yard and garden.  Doing dinosaur presentations in the local schools.  (While in Montana we were able to dig dinosaurs in the Hell Creek Formation in the Missouri Breaks on the property of one of our church members.  All of our grandkids and daughters have dug dinosaur bones.)

I am presently mentoring young men attending NNU that are called to the Ministry.

In our 50 years of marriage God has blessed us in enabling us to travel to Switzerland, Italy, Dominican Republic, Hawaii and Israel.  On the East Coast we have been to Washington DC and Florida, while to the South we have been to Texas and Arizona, (and the States we traveled through to  get to these locations,) to the North, Alaska and have lived and pastored in Washington and Montana.

God has been good to us and we thank Him.

Art Fish
PS  Sorry, won't be able to attend the reunion.

HELLO 56 CLASSMATES

Nothing too exciting compared to the other classmates.   Went to work with Standard Oil of California right out of school as a key punch operator.  Married Tom Sparks (fort) brother Quinton  (Sparkie).  We were married 25 years and had two great sons,  Randy and Jeff.   We divorced in 82 and I remarried in 87 and again am divorced.

Rrandy is a Pharmaceutical  rep and has two daughters, 6 and 8, and lives in  Vancouver.  Jeff retired from the navy with two daughters, 12 and 16 and is a police officer at the Portland Airport.  He also lives in Vancouver,   So when you travel,  He probably is the tallest officer, very skinny like his dad and kinda blond hair.  Say hello to him and say i knew your dad or mom.

I have done (some)  traveling,  Spent about 2 months in Japan.  Loved it there but not the bombing museum.  That was bad.  We were too young to know anything about it all.  Hawaii too many times,  A couple cruises and my great friends from school  have spent two weeks in Cost Rica the last two years and now are planning our great trip in January,   (don't know where)

Hopw to see you all at the reunion.

 Sincerely,   Sandy

Retired from Union Pacific in Portland after 43+ years of service in various positions (never on trains) and enjoy the freedom of retirement. No great accomplishments or degrees, but have enjoyed a satisfying and fulfilling life. Never married, but count my friend's children as the grandchildren I never had. Yes, I spoiled them as I would have my own!

I enjoy playing golf and traveling, especially to Hawaii where I have visited numerous times. I have great fondness for Hawaiian culture, music, food, and the Aloha spirit. I have been active in my church for many years and spent a week in New Orleans this past spring helping people who suffered great loss from Hurricane Katrina.

I haven't attended previous reunions, so I am very much looking forward to our 50th. Great to see the classmate pictures and bios. Amazing how they all look so much older than me! No wonder I don't recognize them at the Mall. Maybe this is why they don't seem to recognize me. Nah!

Thanks Don, and the reunion organizers, for your hard work in bringing us together again.

See you all soon.

After high school I attended  business school at the University of Washington where I received my bachelor's degree. Subsequently I also graduated from the university's Pacific Coast School of Banking.

During my career I held commercial lending and administrative positions in banking and then at a surety company.  I worked in San Francisco for ten years, transferred to Seattle, and ten years later returned to San Francisco where I remained until retirement in 1995.

My wife Kathie and I have been married 42 years. Our oldest son and his family live in Dallas where he practices law.  Our youngest son lives in the Bay Area and teaches school.  We have two grandchildren; Audrey (7) and Jack (4).

I enjoy fly fishing, gardening, retirement and being a grandpa!

Cheers to you all: Bruce Hixon

After graduation from Clark College, I married Harold Dean Layman and moved to Key West Florida where he was stationed in the Navy. We had a baby daughter, Michelle in 1959 then returned to Vancouver, WA. I year later our second daughter, Lori, was born. We lived in Portland for a while, then Lincoln Beach OR, Washougal, then returned to Portland.

In 1973 we moved to Marin County CA. After 18 years of marriage we divorced. Five years later, I remarried and divorced after 9 years. I was then living in Sonoma, CA. While in my second marriage I was fortunate enough to travel to London, England then spent a month traveling around France, including Paris. A dream I had had since high school where I studied French.

My mother passed away from cancer 5 months after my second marriage. My father passed 2 years ago at the age of 93.

I would like very much to re-connect with my childhood best friend, Doreen Carney. I have 4 grandchildren, 3 boys and 1 adorable little seven year old granddaughter.

I never remarried and live alone. Since I won't be able to attend the reunion, I would very much like to get a copy of the photo book that will be made of all those who attend.

Thank you and I hope you all have a wonderful reunion. I will be thinking of all you and wishing I could be there.

Sincerely, Karen

I tried to find Carol Kent Burns. She was living in Mill Valley, CA when I last connected. Any ideas?

Greetings Fellow 1956 Class Members

It appears that there are a lot of us still alive and kicking. Since I live in California I don't get to see many classmates but do get back to Vancouver every year or two.

My dear husband P.J. passed away several weeks after our 25th class reunion, which we both attended.
I did not remarry, instead concentrating on a career in public administration. After receiving a  Master's degree in Public Administration from California State University Long Beach, I was employed by five California cities, retiring in 2000 as a General Services Director/Assistant City Manager.  I must say, retirement is wonderful.

Our daughter Cindy graduated from U.C. Berkeley and our son Scott from U.C. Davis.  They both married and I now have six grandchildren whom I adore.

I have a home in Lodi, CA (known for wineries) for 9 months a year, and in Oro Valley, AZ  for the other 3 months  (winter) in a  retirement community near the Santa Catalina Mountains. After living in Texas, Louisiana, Arizona and California, at times I have longed for the beautiful Pacific Northwest, which is still God's country to me.

I am not sure I can attend the reunion (my grandson is getting married) but I would love to hear from any of my classmates at either of the following email addresses:

I enjoyed attending high school with all of you and have such fond memories of that period of my life.  May God Bless each and everyone of you.

Marcia (Loree) Wessitsh

My elementary school students taught me lots over the years.  Yes, I
was a student of the 8-9 year olds.  Some of their lessons were in
finding joy and laughter, and most of all trust , love, and enthusiasm.

My husband, George, and I travel south in our RV in the winters,
visiting friends and family coast to coast.  We love to discover new
friends and out of the way places the locals tell us about.   At home
in Vancouver, WA, we meet with "old car guys", and help restore the '36
Dodge truck.  I love to get together with other quilters and make some
warm cozy quilts for charity.  We manage a big garden, visit
grandchildren, volunteer at church, and enjoy music. Helping others is
the essence of our lives.

Marcia

Eugene Messer

Since Hudson's Bay I have studied, lived and worked all over the world.
Never married (engaged three times but always escaped before the altar).
No children (other than my poems....I love them but like children they give me enough trouble and they don't pay the bills).

My Father F.O.Messer passed away in 1976. My Mother Martva Helen Keski Messer is still living and the greatest of friends and support.    The photograph was taken on assignment in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico (cafe, dark Latin street, man in dinner jacket, rather 007, don't you think?). I am usually smiling but must not have been happy with the food in this restaurant I had just reviewed. In my writing I cover Paris, France, The Caribbean, New York City, Sonoma Wine Country, CA, Mexico, Las Vegas, Western Canada and the Northwest since I live in it, etc..
As to the rest of my biography I choose to let others speak for me:

Edited from Pallavicini Film Productions International:

EUGENE MESSER'S  literary achievements have ranged from speech writing and political management for national figures ( Sen. Robert Kennedy, VP Hubert Humphrey, Sen. George McGovern, Sargent Shriver amongst others) to poetry, articles, short stories, essays and artistic criticism; theatre. opera, classical music and museum and gallery shows. He is a poet and writer whose workshops and classes are known for their constructive achievement in nurturing and developing literary talent in others. Poetical work of his has been set to music by contemporary American composer Alan Hovhaness in a tribute to the Washington State Centennial. Other works have achieved awards and have been used by governmental organizations and museums as centerpieces for various exhibitions and shows. His writing also includes articles and columns on food, wine and travel which appear in major publications and in-flight magazines. He was one of the first to 'discover' Sonoma County, California Wine Country when Napa County was getting all the wine publicity. He has also edited and or published numerous publications. His writing for the stage has been produced by various organizations including Readerstheatre!, a company with an international reputation which he founded in 1976. His other interests have included writing and project management for World Pacific Pictures the first company to produce a major documentary on the railways of China just after China opened it's doors to the West, and the direction and production of an International Film Festival.

After graduating from HB, I went to Clark College. It took three years to get my degree because Tom Garrow, Elvis Wright, Dave Phelke (Dan's older brother) and I would skip school about every other day to play golf. Following was a brief stint at Western Washington U.

In 1960, I went to work for Household Finance in Vancouver. About one year later, I was transferred to San Francisco, and subsequently managed offices in Medford, Sacramento, Portland and back to SF where I've resided since.

After a few years with Household, I took a job as the credit manager for the SF Hilton Hotel. These were good times when other HB alums and friends would stay there; Dixie Smith, Sue Peterson, Marlene Skeens and others. A lot of pro sports teams would stay at the Hilton when in town playing the Giants and the '49ers so I became friends with many of the players and management. One time I had to go to Woolworth's to get a basket of candy so Sammy Davis Jr. could use it while he sang "The Candy Man."

It was at the Hilton where I met my wife, Gail, a third generation San Franciscan, who was assistant director of National Sales for Hilton. We were married 34 years ago at the Las Vegas Hilton and were treated to see Elvis -- which turned out not to be such a treat as he was in his "declining years."

While attending the 20th HB reunion, Gail and I won first prize for having the youngest child!

After 10 years at the Hilton, I started renovating Victorian homes which resulted getting into real estate which I did until retirement at 62. We currently live is a 1913 Edwardian house 1 and 1/2 blocks above St. Paul's Church which is where we watched Whoopie Goldberg filming "Sister Act" and saw our neighborhood transformed into a slum.

Our daughter was married five years ago, and they have a 2 year old son who we are crazy about. She will continue her studies in American Sign Language when he goes to school. Our son is 25 years old, graduated from Cal Poly last year and is a landscape supervisor in the south bay.

After the enclosed photo was taken, I cut my hair, went back to being a blonde -- although Gail says I'm gray. But I'm sure she is color blind. See you in the fall.

Editor's note: Normally, I crop any picture and just print the classmate without the spouse.  I made an except in this case :)

I met my husband, Baha, in 1958 when he was a Ph.D. student at the University of Washington and I was an undergraduate. We are both sociologists and we have had long academic careers in the same department at the same university. We have a son (a specialist in Emergency Medicine and professor at the University of British Columbia) and a daughter (a professor in Political Science at the University of Alberta).  Both are married and each has a child, so we have two young grandsons. Over the years we have traveled a lot and lived in the U.S., the Middle East and Canada. I am unable to attend the 50th reunion but it would be wonderful to hear from old classmates.

All the very best to all of you,

Trudy ODell Steinbarge:

Family:            Husband of 50 years, Bob Steinbarge (Class of 1955); three children; six
                       grand-children; a great-grandchild due in January 2007.

Interests:         Antiques - glass and furniture
Collectible jewelry precious and semi-precious stones and pearls
                      Gardening
                      Home remodeling and decorating

Pastimes:       We used to enjoy long walks on the beach, until the tsunami scares. The
house we owned was only ten feet above sea level.  My favorite thing is
nature.  Bob and I take our coffee and breakfast outside every morning, even
when it rains. There is beauty in all kinds of things.

Our motto:      Treat others as I want to be treated. If everybody does, well all be happier.

On the past: Even on the worst days, we could find something to laugh about.  Bob says I
have been a wonderful homemaker.  He also says we have had a good marriage because hes done
                   everything I asked.

Regarding the future:
                    A good day is when I am not in the obituaries.  Bob wants to live to be a 105;
Id like a 104.  Our most important goal is to enjoy good health and a place to share a cup of coffee.

This is my first reunion.  Both Bob and I look forward to seeing you.

 Trudy

After high school, I attended a long list of colleges and universities (Washington State College now known as WSU, University of Washington, Tulane University, Louisiana State University, UCLA and finally the University of California, Irvine), ending up as an aerospace engineer.  I Worked for Boeing in Seattle and New Orleans and later for North American Aviation in Anaheim, California.  In 1979, I was transferred to Sacramento and we set up household in Grass Valley, California where our children could enjoy country life and keep horses on our own property.  North American Aviation became North American Rockwell which became Rockwell International and later was purchased by Boeingso I retired from Boeing.  I married my college sweetheart, Johanne Falkner in 1960.  We have two daughters and two grandchildren all of which live near us in the Sacramento area.

I work as my own gardener and whenever possible spend time spoiling my grandchildren.

Because we enjoy traveling to Spanish speaking countries, Johanne and I are enrolled in a community college learning to speak Spanish.  Recently we traveled to Costa Rica to attend language school and I enjoyed some fishing in the process.

We are looking forward to the reunion in August.  Its been a long time since I have seen most of my classmates.
