A 59-year-old widower, Ove represents a Scandinavian everyman who saunters on no matter
what life throws at him. He is a cantankerous and nosy old man who was ousted from his job
as the president of the block association ages ago, and he’s never forgiven the mutiny—or fully
relinquished his duties. We come to meet the younger Ove through vivid flashbacks and learn that
he was a prudent but good-hearted man whose life was marked by both unspeakable tragedy and
overwhelming love. As we learn more, it is impossible not to root for the depressed, guarded, and
ultimately endearing Ove.
2016 European Film Awards, winner: European Comedy.
