At their father’s funeral in a faraway coastal town, the sisters Sachi, Yoshino, and Chika discover
another sibling, 13-year-old Suzu, who seems destined for a pre-ball Cinderella existence with her
unsympathetic stepmother. Suzu’s half-sisters rescue her from that fate, bringing her to live with them. By the end of the film a Zen-like calm settles over the story and we are shaken at how much we care about these young women and how sorry we are to leave their company. This is a delightfully beautiful drama with comedic undertones about the tension between the comforts of family life and the vast possibilities beyond it.
2016 Awards of the Japanese Academy, winner: Best Film, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Lighting, Newcomer of Year.
