Rexroth says, "The music for this concert explores a wide variety of textures and colors.  For example, the Brahms and the Kristofferson are rich and dark, with many layers at the same time.  The Dahl and the Copland create more delicate textures – sometimes almost transparent.  And, everyone will recognize Copland’s famous tune, Simple Gifts, toward the end of the piece.

American composer William Schuman’s New England Triptych uses pre-existing tunes of Revolutionary War America as the basis for each composed movement.  The textures change throughout each movement, featuring solo instruments, and different sections of the ensemble.  The middle movement is a beautiful showcase for trumpet and euphonium – their slow, melodic lines overlap to spin out a haunting and thoughtful piece of music."
