Barbara Lindquist (1930-2013) was a graduate of Parkside from the class of 1971. She was an active author, visual artist, bookstore owner, and builder of musical instruments and boats. Residing in the Kenosha/Racine area all her life, she trained as a Luthier in her teens, and at the age of 18, she built a violin. She went on to build boats, teach children with learning disabilities, write and play music, become an award-winning artist, and illustrated, wrote, and published early abuse therapy and prevention books. Her interest in musical instrument construction resumed in the mid 1990’s, when a friend asked her to repair a broken guitar. She then went on to construct 59 musical instruments.

Making Music and Waves, now on display in the Mathis Gallery, is an array of Lindquist’s highly detailed, hand-crafted guitars, lutes, and other stringed instruments, as well as beautiful nautical-themed illustrations. Her work is on display from now until January 5, with an opening reception on December 3 from 4-6pm.
