Genetic Counseling Program Pre-requisites and Electives

The common science/math pre-requisite classes that are required by most genetic counseling programs include:

  1. One year of General Biology (BIOS 101 and 102 – 8 credits total)
  2. One year of General Chemistry (CHEM 101 and 102 – 10 credits total)
  3. One year of Organic Chemistry (CHEM 321, 322, and 323 – 11 credits total)
  4. At least one semester of Psychology (PSYC 101 – 3 credits)
  5. Statistics (BIOS 210 – 4 credits)
  6. Genetics (BIOS 260 – 4 credits)
  7. Molecular Biology (BIOS 309 – 3 credits)

Other classes you may want to consider taking as electives to help you prepare for genetic counseling school include:

  • As many advanced Genetics courses as possible, see your advisor regarding this
  • Advanced Psychology courses, see your advisor regarding this
