As part of your application, please provide a statement of purpose so that the committee members get to know you, your background experience, why you want to attend graduate school, and what you intend to do with your educational accomplishment. Please limit your statement to 500 words. A statement of purpose is geared to convince committee members that you have academic/professional achievements that will prepare you for graduate study.

The following sections describe some options you can discuss in your statement of purpose. These are only suggested guidelines that we hope will help you to focus your essay on the essential components contributing to your intention to attend graduate school.

Please do not answer the questions directly but use them as guideposts to construct a wholistic essay.

  1. Introduce yourself by identifying your interests and motivations. Why do you want to go to graduate school? What aspects of the program interest you? How might our course offerings relate to your interest in our program? This is the introduction to your essay, so general, succinct information is appropriate. Be direct and to the point.
  2. Summarize your past experience in college, research you might have conducted or been interested in, and/or professional experience you have accumulated and how that prepares you for graduate study.
  3. Elaborate on you current and most recent experience (professional, academic, other) and discuss the kind of work you’ve been doing, the various responsibilities you have performed, and how graduate school will help you to further your future goals and achievements.
  4. Elaborate on your academic interests. Discuss what you would like to study and with whom you might be interested in working. Why do you wish to work with a particular faculty member? How do you understand her/his research?

A statement of purpose highlighting compelling industry experience and relevant undergraduate course work.

** A statement is not necessary if you meet the requirements for unconditional admission of a 3.0 undergraduate GPA with a degree in Sport Management or Business.

A statement of personal intent up to 1,000 words.
