Pre PHysical Therapy Program

 

The pre physical therapy program at Parkside is designed to help you gain the necessary academic and professional requirements that will help you become a competitive candidate for professional physical therapy schools. We offer exceptional learning opportunities in a small class setting which helps with your success. 

 

Parkside's physical therapy program provides you the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to pursue the next step in your physical therapy degree. If you visualize yourself working collaboratively with other health professional, and helping clients of different ages, health conditions and limitations, restore a quality of life, then a pre-professional path was created for you.

Some of the ways we help while you pursue success in the Pre Physical Therapy program

  • Assistance in obtaining shadowing and internship experiences with local physical therapists 
     
  • Help to ensure you are choosing the correct career pathway
      
  • Gain experience which is a requirement to gain acceptance into physical therapy school  (In fact, most DPT programs require a minimum of 80 hours of physical therapy experience.)

Students hoping to gain acceptance into professional health programs can pursue a major in any department/discipline throughout the university.

Below is a list of common science and math prerequisite courses that are required by most physical therapy school programs 

Anatomy and Physiology | BIOS 105 and 106 |10 credits OR BIOS 300 and BIOS 341 | 7 credits | 1 year

Biology | BIOS 101  and 102 | 8 credits | 1 year

Chemistry | CHEM 101 and 102 |10 credits | 1 year

Physics | PHYS 105 and 106 |10 credits | 1 year

Psychology | 3 semesters:
Introduction to Psychological Sciences
| PSYC 101 | 3 credits

Developmental Psychology | PSYC 210 | 3 credits 

Abnormal Psychology | PSYC 360 | 3 credits

Other classes you may want to consider taking as electives to help you prepare for physical therapy school 

Biomechanics | HESM 353 | 4 credits

Physiology of Exercise | HESM 354 | 4 credits

Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries | HESM 345 | 3 credits

Therapeutic Exercise for Athletic Injuries | HESM 445 | 3 credits

Neuroscience | BIOS 420 | 3 credits
