HOUSING AND DINING CONTRACT PROCESS

You’ve done your homework and know living on campus is a great value. National research shows students who live on campus tend to have higher GPAs and persist to graduation at higher rates than their peers. Students who plan to live on campus must complete a Housing and Dining contract to get a room assignment.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT

The Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System requires that all freshman and sophomore students live in University operated housing during the academic year. View exemptions to this policy below.

VIOLATION OF RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT
Enrolled first-year and second-year students who do not comply with this policy, or who have not been approved for a housing exemption, will be charged for BOTH:

A.) The rate of a traditional double room in Ranger Hall

B.) The rate of the Parkside on-campus dining plan

Housing and Residence Life will communicate housing assignments and add charges to student accounts.

Exemptions

  • Veterans
  • Married
  • Living with dependent children
  • Living with parents or guardian within the commutable range

CONTRACT CANCELLATION

Students wishing to cancel their Housing and Dining contracts should review Section 9 of your Housing and Dining contract, available in MyHousing, for the Cancellation terms. Students must submit a Request to be Released form in MyHousing under “Contracts”, and “Request to be Released”. Requests will be reviewed, and you will receive notification to your Ranger email account. Granted contract releases after the cancellation period in your contract, Section 9B, are subject to a $200 cancellation fee.

Caution: Before submitting your request, review the Common Reasons Requests are Denied. Submitting this request does NOT guarantee you will be released from your contract. Do NOT make other arrangements until you have received written notification granting your release.

The following are common reasons student request to be released from their housing contract that do NOT meet the “Reasons for Release” stated in their contract.

Financial Difficulty
Lack of funds alone is not an acceptable basis for a release. Financial aid is available to those who qualify based on need. There should be a significant change in your financial situation that is not rectifiable. Finances for the academic year should be considered prior to completing the contract and/or enrollment to the University. Late notice and inadequate notice from the Financial Aid Office is not grounds for release. It is the student’s responsibility to check on their financial aid status.

Unhappiness with Residence Hall Life
On-campus living is a new experience for most students and requires a certain amount of adjustment. Staff are available as a resource to help students navigate these changes and explore their options. Residents are expected to actively engage in enacting solutions to their situations to ensure they are happy with their housing experience.

Age
Students must qualify by the start of the contract term to be released based on age.

Commuting/Living with a Parent or Guardian
The choice to commute from the home of a parent or legal guardian must be made before completion of the Housing and Dining Service contract. Students may commute from the parent’s or legal guardian’s home if it is within a 40-mile radius of UW-Parkside.

The policy does not allow for living with siblings, grandparents, other relatives, or fiancée/significant other. Permission to live with a relative must be based on extraordinary and/or compelling circumstances with documentation of such and not for the financial gain or convenience of the student and/or relative.

Health Conditions and/or Disability
Even with medical documentation, most medical conditions DO NOT automatically release one from the contract. Students must work with Accessibility Services to complete paperwork and discuss necessary housing accommodations due to medical conditions or disabilities. They will let Housing and Residence Life know about approved accommodations. Students will only be released when the campus cannot provide an accessible living environment.

Online Courses
The choice to register for online courses is not an acceptable basis for a release. Students who change to an online-only program/major and include documentation showing participation in an online degree will be considered.

step 2

ENTER YOUR PREFERENCES AND REQUESTS

Requests for roommates, room types, and buildings are not guaranteed. They are subject to availability and time of application. You may add your name to the waitlist for these spaces in MyHousing, under Room Selection.

step 3

SELECT YOUR DINING PLAN

Having a residential dining plan is a requirement of living on campus. You select your dining plan when completing the contract in MyHousing

step 4

UNDER 18?

If you are under the age of 18 at the time of contract submission, you must have a parent or legal guardian verify acceptance of the contract terms.  The person listed on your contract as the "Primary Family Member" will receive an email with a link and verification code.  This step must be done for the contract to be considered complete and assignments can be made.

step 5

CONTRACT FEE PAYMENT

If you are new to campus living, you will be charged a $50 contract fee.  This fee is non-refundable.  The fee will be placed on your SOLAR account right before the start of the term.

step6

CHECK YOUR PARKSIDE EMAIL

Once your contract is complete, you will receive a confirmation page and email with a copy of the contract.  Continue to check your Parkside email for room assignment and move-in information.  New fall assignments are emailed starting in mid- April and in mid-January for new spring assignments.
