We had a busy year at UW-Parkside! See below for a list of notable events and achievements that happened over the summer and fall 2019 semester.

Davis and Glass Honored by UW System

Tavyonia Davis, a junior majoring in psychology and sociology earned the P.B. Poorman Award for Outstanding Achievement on Behalf of LGBTQ+ People. UW System also honored Dr. Sheronda Glass, UW-Parkside assistant vice chancellor of Human Resources and Employee Engagement, with an Outstanding Women of Color in Education Award.

New Center for Adult and Returning Students

UW-Parkside’s new Center for Adult and Returning Students (CARS) officially launched Nov. 11. CARS is a resource hub for prospective and enrolled adult students, as well as university faculty and staff.

UWP Enrollment Up

UW System released enrollment data for fall 2019 and UW-Parkside was among those showing enrollment increase. The addition of new master’s degree programs is key to the university’s growth.

New Master’s Programs

UW Extended Campus, in partnership with UW-Parkside and other UW System campuses, will offer new online master of science degrees in Applied Biotechnology, and Information Technology Management starting in 2020. Applications are now being accepted for the degree programs.

HARIBO and UWP Partnership

HARIBO of America, Inc. and UW-Parkside announced a 10-year, wide-ranging partnership in October that will provide more access to financial support for students, create internship and career opportunities, and jumpstart an impactful facility enhancement.

University Sales Center Alliance 

The UW-Parkside sales program has been accepted as an Associate Member of the University Sales Center Alliance. The USCA is a consortium of sales educators dedicated to advancing the sales profession through teaching, research, and outreach.

Frances Bedford 95th Birthday Celebration

Emerita Music Professor Frances E. Bedford was honored by UW-Parkside at a 95th birthday celebration on campus in September. The Bedford Concert Hall is named in her honor.

‘All In Wisconsin’ Tour

UW System President Ray Cross, Regent President Andrew S. Petersen, and Regent Janice Mueller joined UW-Parkside Chancellor Debbie Ford in September for the inaugural UW System “All In Wisconsin” tour. Business and community leaders were part of a conversation about the many ways in which the UW System brings value and talent to Wisconsin.

50-Year Land-Use Agreement

UW-Parkside and Kenosha County officials celebrated the beginning of a collaboration aimed at improving the ecology and recreational opportunities on 139 acres of campus property that borders Petrifying Springs Park. UW-Parkside Chancellor Debbie Ford joined Kenosha County Executive Jim Kreuser (’83 and '86) to sign the 50-year agreement.

Rusty Patched Bumble Bee Creates Buzz

Representatives from UW-Parkside and the Root-Pike Watershed Initiative Network (WIN) announced a new partnership: the Pollinator Patch Program. The goal of the program is to develop a land-restoration plan and create more habitat for the Rusty Patched Bumble Bee – an endangered pollinator.

Cassie Van Hoof, Innovator of the Year

Kenosha-area resident and UW-Parkside senior Cassie Van Hoof earned the WiSys 2019 Carl E. Gulbrandsen Innovator of the Year Award for exemplary contributions to Wisconsin innovation. She received the award at WSTS, a two-day UW System-focused research an innovation symposium.

Boswell Odyssey at the Fringe 

In August, four UW-Parkside theatre students had the incredible opportunity to help produce and perform “Boswell” at the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. “Boswell” was a collaboration with Milwaukee-based playwright Marie Kohler.

Two Worlds, One Art

Voices of Parkside members performed “The Moon Represents My Heart” — one of the best-known Chinese pop songs — for two concerts alongside a Jianghan University choir from Wuhan, China, during a unique collaboration called “Two Worlds, One Art.” The Jianghan students came to Wisconsin in May, and the UW-Parkside group, led by Music Professor Dr. James Kinchen, traveled to China in June.

The new online UW Flexible Option bachelor’s degree in business administration is innovative and accessible. Add to that, affordable. GreatBusinessSchools.org (GBS) named the breakthrough program among the top three most affordable business degree programs in the U.S.

UW-Parkside was one of the “Forward Award” honorees at the 2019 Kenosha Area Business Alliance Ovation Awards ceremony. The awards dinner was held at UW-Parkside on Nov. 7.
