DIRECTOR'S NOTES
There is an energy at the heart of Cabaret. It is a boho sideshow where people are invited to forget their troubles. The music is infectious. The humor is sharp. The lights glow just brightly enough to distract from what is happening outside the club doors. Set in the final days of the Weimar Republic, the musical reminds us how easy it is to laugh, to look away, and to believe the storm will not reach us.
In our production, we blur the line between 1929 Berlin and a group of young actors in 2026 creating Cabaret. The Kit Kat Club becomes both a place and a process. Performance and reality overlap. The distance between past and present disappears. These characters feel immediate and recognizable. Their choices ask us uncomfortable questions. When do we speak? When do we stay silent? What does it cost to ignore what we know is happening?
Cabaret does not offer easy answers. It holds up a mirror. It reflects both the freedom of the Kit Kat Club and the consequences of indifference. If the show feels entertaining, it should. If it feels unsettling, it must. The question is not whether we recognize this world, but whether we recognize ourselves in it.
Brett Olson - Director
DRAMATURG’S NOTES
Throughout the story of Cabaret, we learn of the story of these characters, reflections of real people experiencing the start of a fascist regime in 1930s Germany, in the intoxicatingly raunchy glitz and glamour of the Kit Kat Klub. The place is a drug, a sanctuary, a fantasy, even as the world outside begins to fall apart. Living in the world of the Kit Kat Klub is escapism at its finest, but there falls the tragedy of Cabaret: to be ignorant and dismissive of problems until it’s far too late to do anything in response, and it’s not long before the world outside and the world inside bleed into one another without any degree of separation.
So what does that have to do with any of us?
The thing is, the themes of Cabaret ring true even almost a century later, paralleled to a terrifying degree. Our cabaret has changed in the modern age and taken on other forms: social media platforms, video games, streaming services, social gatherings… Anything to distract ourselves from the issues of the world today.
But you’ve seen what’s been happening all over the world and even things in our country today. Now more than ever we have access to the means that expose us to these things. Whether it be international headlines or local news, there is no denying that things are happening so close to home.
Cabaret is not only a show, but a warning.
The only question is will you choose to do something about it.
