DIRECTOR'S NOTES

Amy Bates

In the grand tradition of Jane Austen, and with a gentle wink toward a certain Regency-era gossip rag that rhymes with Bridgerton, welcome to Pemberley, where the candles burn bright, the wit is sharp, and the emotional revelations are as inevitable as a well-timed piano flourish.

At the heart of this story is something I like to call the Golden Glow of Christmas: that warm, unmistakable radiance that arrives when people gather, collide, confess, forgive, and occasionally panic about the arrangement of greenery. It’s the glow that comes not from perfection, but from connection; not from the size of the estate, but from the size of the heart. And no one embodies that more delightfully than Mary Bennet, who dares to want more than society expects, and discovers that even in the genteel quiet of the holiday season, change is both possible and necessary.

This production shines because of the extraordinary collaboration of our Theatre Arts Company, whose dedication would impress even Lady Whistledown herself. Our actors, technicians, designers, stage managers, and artisans have poured themselves into creating a world that feels elegantly Austen, charmingly festive, and unmistakably Parkside. They’ve built a Pemberley that is both timeless and alive, full of light, laughter, and the occasional well-placed barb.

I am equally grateful for our remarkable faculty and staff, whose artistry and mentorship infuse every corner of this production. Their support forms the sturdy foundation upon which students and this show - stand tall. Consider them the true Dukes and Duchesses of Parkside (titles bestowed by me, but entirely deserved).

Thank you for joining us. May tonight’s visit to Pemberley bring you joy, sparkle, and perhaps your own Golden Glow of Christmas. After all, as Austen herself might say, it is a truth universally acknowledged that a weary world in December must be in want of a little wonder.

Enjoy the show!

DRAMATURG'S NOTES

Abby Bonham

Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley is a fun and stylized take on the world of Pride and Prejudice. Written by Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon to be a continuation of the Bennet sister’s lives and antics with Marry Bennet at the forefront. This play combines Jane Austen’s timeless work and the regency period with the nostalgia of Christmas and a fresher modern lens. Gunderson reimagines the minor character that was Mary Bennet to be intelligent, outspoken, and lovable. Her feminist perspective gives characters depth while still maintaining core aspects of Austen’s writing. This play seamlessly blends everything we love about Jane Austen and the Regency era with timeless Christmas memories. In the words of Gunderson herself, “You know what people love? Jane Austen. You know what people really love? Christmas and Jane Austen.” (Gunderson, 2017).
