DIRECTOR'S NOTES
Directing this production of Our Town has been one of the joys of my career as a theatre artist. I have wanted to for decades, but the stars never quite lined up, and the theatres where I most frequently work can't afford a cast of 14 actors. It happened as it should have, in the end, because the gift of exploring this masterpiece with young actors and designers has been well worth the wait.
Thorton Wilder wrote Our Town in 1938, after having grown up during WWI and living on the precipice of WWII. Wilder said this play is about "the life of a village against the life of the stars" and has it explore “the extraordinary, even the sacred quality of everyday life,” wishing we humans were able to be aware of the beauty of life while living it.
Wilder's simple setting and call for no props or scenery was a movement away from the hyper-realism of the previous generation of playwrights. He was inspired by the symbolic and simple theatrical style he witnessed in traditional Japanese productions. The result is a play the focuses steadily on the characters' relationships to each other, and the actors' dependence on each other to create the story.
The character of the Stage Manager brings the audience directly into the creation of the play, asking them to use their imaginations with the rest of the cast, dissolving the barrier between actors and spectators. The play requires everyone in the room to commit to the reality being drawn, bringing forth the story from our collective soul.
Edward Albee called Our Town “the greatest American play ever written.”
I hope you enjoy it.
