Director’s Notes
“If the thought of radical change
Scares you more than the thought of disaster,
What can you do
To stop the disaster?”
Responding to the disaster unfolding before his very eyes, Swiss playwright and novelist Max Frisch sketched out a draft for a new play. The year was 1948, and the Communist takeover of Prague was complete. Though the Allied Forces were successful in defeating the horrors of Nazism and Fascism, in so doing they opened the gates to the creation of the Soviet Union. The decades long Cold War between the United States and Russia had begun.
Originally titled Biedermann und die Brandstifter or Biedermann and the Fire Raisers, the play has had several translations, bringing with them multiple titles including, The Firebugs, The Fire Raisers, and The Arsonists. It was first produced as a radio play in 1953 before being adapted for television and then for the stage in 1958. Since then, it has been regularly produced throughout the world.
The play is often seen as a metaphor for what happens when you attempt to appease Fascists or, in the world of the play, Arsonists. By “befriending” Sepp and Willi, Biedermann believes his home will be spared; “At least it isn’t our house” he says while the sirens shriek and the town burns. But of course, there is no placating those who choose Fascism/Arson; we know this from our all too many flirtations with this rotten and cruel form of governance. Sepp and Willi will burn everything to the ground, and they will do it with Biedermann’s own matches. “They do it because they like doing it.”
It is a play that sadly remains as timely now as it was when first written. That said, it is also shockingly funny. Yes, funny! Like all anti-fascists (forgive the now misunderstood and politicized term), Frisch uses comedy to drive his point. Comedy is kryptonite to wannabe dictators, and a wonderful weapon against those who wish to rescind our basic freedoms. They hate it. They fear it. Frisch understood this all too well and creates a dark, absurdist comedy complete with a well-meaning Greek Chorus of firefighters haplessly lurching from one could-be disaster to the next, until it is too late.
Sir Austin Chamberlain, the 1930s British statesman once said, “may you live in interesting times”. Frisch certainly did, as we do now. As I write, there are Arsonists busily at work to burn everything down around us. May Herr Frisch’s play always be a reminding light of a horrible past to help us keep the dark at bay in our present and for our future.
Thanks for coming to play with us.
