Graphic Design Minor

At Parkside, art students work in new, well-equipped, spacious studios with faculty seriously committed to quality teaching as well as to production, exhibition, and publication in their own areas of professional specialization.

The graphic design minor is designed for students who wish to acquire skills focused on the digital arts to complement artistic disciplines.

As graphic design is a creative synthesis of both artistic and technological means to communicate ideas, students develop strategies for creative problem solving that relate to the numerous specialized fields of graphic design.

Lisa Marie Barber, MFA

Professor, Art / Director, Liberal Studies / Academic Director, UW Collaborative AAS / Community Liaison in the Arts

I am originally from Tucson, AZ and in 2003 moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to Kenosha to begin my professorship at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. I am currently a Full Professor in the Department of Art and Design where I served as department chair (2012-2018) and now lead the campus' Liberal Studies and UW Collaborative Online Associates of Arts and Sciences programs.

Active in my studio practice, I exhibit nationally, including solo shows in New York City, Chicago, and throughout California. My work has been featured and reviewed in several publications, including American Craft, Ceramics Monthly, National Council on Education in the Ceramic Arts (NCECA), and multiple books. I’ve given workshops, lectures, and classes at various professional venues around the country, and I've held Artist-in-Residence positions at City University of New York-Hunter College, Northern Clay Center (as a McKnight awardee), and Works San Jose -- among other internationally competitive studios.

Trenton Baylor

Associate Professor - Art - Sculpture

Born and raised in Milwaukee, WI, Trenton Baylor received a Bachelor’s degree in Art and Certification to Teach Art (K-12) from the University of Wisconsin –Parkside’96 and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin Madison ’99. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Art and Design Department at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside where he teaches Sculpture, Digital Fabrication and Woodworking and Furniture Design courses. He continues to exhibit his sculpture in local, regional, and national exhibitions and has several works in public and private collections.

Doug Singsen, PhD

Associate Professor - Art History

I was born in Providence, Rhode Island and attended Haverford College, where I received a BA in Painting in 2000. After working as a graphic designer for a year, I relocated to New York City, where I entered the PhD program in Art History at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. I moved to Boulder, Colorado, in 2012, where I completed my dissertation in 2013. While in grad school, I taught courses at the School of Visual Arts, Brooklyn College, New York City College of Technology, Montclair State University, and Metropolitan State University of Denver. I began teaching at Parkside in 2014 and received tenure in 2020. In addition to my teaching duties, in 2020 I began serving as Director of the General Education Program.

Carey Watters, MFA

Professor

Carey Watters, is professor of graphic design at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wisconsin. She received her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in printmaking and book arts. Watters has been working as a professional graphic designer since receiving her BFA is graphic design from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1999. Her book and collage work weave together concepts regarding feminism, historic map making, and religious and pagan symbolism. Her work is a direct result of her residencies and travels to Calabria, Basilicata, and Puglia, Italy and her research of Byzantine architecture, design, and religious reliquaries.
