Placement

All NEW First-Year and Transfer students must have a placement/milestone before they can register for math, English or a modern language course. Initial placement is determined by transferable college credit from an accredited college/university in Math and English, including AP/IB/CLEP scores. If no transferable college credit exists, initial placement will look at high school GPA or transfer GPA.

To place beyond the entry level math or English course, students should submit an ACT or SAT score, a AP/IB/CLEP score or take the Wisconsin placement exam (WPT).

*Students who have transferable college credit from an accredited college/university in Math and/or English are not eligible to complete placement testing as established college credit already exists.

Example Scenarios
Student A has a HS GPA of 2.25, so their initial placement is MATH 100. The student submits ACT results that show their math subscore is 19, their placement would change to MATH102|103|104|111.

Student B has a HS GPA of 2.8, so their initial placement is MATH102|103|104|111. They decide to take the math placement exam and they achieve a MFND score of 570 and a AALG score of 546 and a TAG score of 480, they would place into MATH 114.

Student C has a HS GPA of 3.5, so their initial placement is MATH102|103|104|111. They complete CalculusAB AP course and get a score of 4, their placement would change to MATH 222.

Students interested in improving their placement should consider submitting an ACT or SAT score or taking the Math Placement exam at least 48 hours prior to new student orientation.

Example Scenarios
Student A has a HSGPA below 3.249 so they would be placed in English 100. The student then submits an ACT exam with an English sub-score of 23, then their placement would change to ENGL101.

Student B has a HSGPA of 3.7 so they would be placed into English 101. The student submits an ACT English subscore of 30, then their placement would change to English Exempt.

Students interested in improving their placement should consider submitting an ACT or SAT score or taking the English Placement exam at least 2 weeks prior to new student orientation.

Students interested in taking a world language course who have not taken a college level world language course or an AP/IP world language exam with the required score, should take a world language placement exam.

Students who place in 203 or above have satisfied the Foreign Language General Education Requirement.

Accessing Placement Exams

All testing is completed online through the UW Center for Placement Testing. UW-Parkside does not offer in-person testing.

To access the placement exams, please following the step by step instructions listed below. You MUST have your UW-Parkside account activated in order to access placement testing. If you have not already done so, please go here to activate your account.

While extensive, these instructions include all pertinent information regarding placement testing access and should be followed closely.

Navigate to the UW Center for Placement Testing website.
Click the “Registration Form” link on the website.
You will be directed to select your institution. Select UW-Parkside and click the “Go” button.
Authenticate your account using Okta.
After logging in, you will be taken back to the testing homepage. Click the “Registration Form” link once more to be taken to the registration page.
Fill out the registration form. Please list your Ranger Mail as your email address so that messages from UW Center for Placement Testing do not go to your junk/spam folder. The questions that are greyed out at the bottom do not need to be filled out.
After you submit your registration form you will be emailed a registration code to the email you listed on the form. Check your email to enter the registration code that was sent to you from regionaltesting@exams.wisc.edu. Make sure to check your junk/spam folder if needed.
After you enter your registration code, you will be taken to the instructions page. Here, it will explain that you will receive an email from candidatesupport@meazurelearning.com with instructions on how to access your placement exams online. This may take up to 30 minutes to receive. Again, make sure to check your junk/spam folder if needed. If you do not receive an email, please reach out to the UW Center for Placement Testing directly at (608) 262-5863. UW-Parkside will unfortunately NOT be able to troubleshoot at this step. *Please note that the instructions webpage will include information on Math test A and Math test B. UW-Parkside does NOT require students to complete a proctored Math test. Please proceed with the instructions below using the Math A (unproctored) test.
The email you receive will have testing instructions and will include the link to the testing website, your username, and password. You can will only need the information listed under the “On Demand Unproctored Testing” header of the email. Everything else you can disregard as UW-Parkside does not require the live proctoring option.
Navigate to the testing website using the link in the instructions email and enter the username and password sent in your instruction email.
You will see you have access to all five placement exams. You only need to take the exam that you need for placement.
On the left-hand side of the screen, you will see the option to take a “Sample Test”. The sample test is not a practice exam, rather, it shows you how to use the testing site. This step is optional to complete. If you would like to take a practice exam, please scroll to the bottom of the placement webpage to access the practice exams.
You will receive confirmations after each test your complete. Please remember, it does take 48 hours to receive your exam results.

What If I Don’t Have Access to a Computer/Internet?

If you do not have access to a home computer or internet, please contact placement@uwp.edu or give us a call at (262) 595-2721 and we can set up a time for you to come to campus to complete the placement exam(s) needed.

Scores

Students will receive their scores via email to their Ranger Mail account 48 business hours after the test(s) is completed.

Retaking an Exam

Students are allowed to retake each exam one time. The highest score attempted will be used. If you would like to retake an exam, you MUST contact Admissions & New Student Services at placement@uwp.edu with your first and last name, your date of birth, and the test you’d like to retake so we can give permission to the UW Center for Placement Testing to reset your account.

Students who have taken Advanced Placement tests, International Baccalaureate exams, or College Level Examination Program tests in math, English or Foreign language should submit official test results to Admissions. After we receive your official score, we will review and adjust and your course placement as necessary.
