Introduction to Applied Health Sciences | 101
Provides an overview of the applied health sciences major. Focuses on specific information about health career options. Covers the value and importance of service, current topics in health care, ethics in the health sciences, and cultural sensitivity within health careers. Additionally, students will gain experience in professional writing, presentation techniques, portfolio development and service learning.
Human Physiology and Anatomy | 105
An integrated lecture/laboratory course using a system approach to understand structure and function of the human body. Topics include homeostasis, biological and chemical principles, tissues, skin, skeleton, muscles and digestion, and includes cat dissection and cadaver demonstration.
Internship/Fieldwork | 494
Provides students with learning experiences within professional fields that are related to their professional career goals; including, but not limited to: business operations, professional competencies and conduct, and overall work environment. Requires placement approval by AHS academic adviser or the CHS director.
One of the unique aspects of the AHS major is its strong emphasis on hands-on, clinical experiences for its students. Each student within the major is required to obtain a minimum of three hundred hours of patient contact experience within their chosen concentration area. This exposure to the actual “job” not only is a requirement for most professional programs, but, more importantly, helps students obtain a deeper understanding of the professional careers they are considering.
Our graduates are succeeding at some of the top schools in the nation, including the Medical College of Wisconsin, UW-Madison, the University of Chicago, Washington University School of Medicine, and Johns Hopkins. In their professional careers, Parkside graduates play key roles at leading employers such as: Abbott Laboratories, SC Johnson, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Aurora Healthcare, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, and many others.
Since the inception of the program (2007):
- 87.8% of our graduates have been accepted to professional health programs
- 100% acceptance rate into Chiropractic Schools
- 86% acceptance rate into Masters of Occupational Therapy Schools
