Nursing Major (Consortial Program)
Become an advocate and health educator for patients, families, and communities. You will learn to provide direct patient care, observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress. You will be prepared to be a science-based, compassionate nurse leader through innovate and quality education programming that prepares generalists in a variety of settings.
Undergraduate nursing education maximizes hands-on learning, technological innovation and training, and a comprehensive survey of nursing theory and practice. Clinical placements in the Racine-Kenosha area and intensive study define the last half of your undergraduate education.
Through a consortial agreement, UW-Parkside’s Signature Pre-Health program collaborates with UW-Milwaukee School of Nursing to offer students the highest quality nursing program at a location convenient to you. Through it all, supportive faculty, nursing mentors and a close cohort of fellow students make this a career-preparatory, enriching, and community-focused academic experience.

The nursing program offered by UW-Milwaukee and UW-Parkside was one of the first baccalaureate consortia arrangements established within the University of Wisconsin System. Students enroll in courses taught by faculty members from UW-Milwaukee and UW-Parkside, and all courses are taught at Parkside. Successful nursing candidates are awarded a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from UW-Milwaukee.
Students who are admitted to the nursing program are required to meet UWM’s general education requirements, since the degree will be granted by UWM.
UWM’s general education requirements include:
Humanities | 6 hours
Arts | 3 hours
History | 3 hours
Foreign language | college level | 2 semesters*
Math requirement | college algebra
*Or 2 years high school of the same foreign language
Since its inception in 1980, the UWM/Parkside Nursing Consortium has grown to accept a clinical cohort of 40 new students each year. Clinical partners in the I-94 corridor include large partners like: Ascension, Aurora, Froedtert, VA Hospital, and Brookside Care Center.

Transfer Students and Second Degree Students
Submit application materials listed by March 1st (Fall semester) or December 1st (Spring semester)
All transfer students must register for and attend a Transfer Transition Orientation to register for classes.
Inquiring Transfer Students
For a credit evaluation for possible transfer credits prior to applying to UW-Parkside, email your unofficial transcripts and contact information to the nursing advisor at vara@uwp.edu and admissions@uwp.edu. Please allow 2-5 business days for an unofficial evaluation.
Students considering transferring or changing their major to Nursing should contact an academic advisor as early as possible.
Early planning is key to a successful transfer. We ensure that your courses will transfer into our curriculum and also see how they fit into the sequencing of your classes. We’ll also help you understand the proper timing for applying to the professional nursing major.
Our traditional nursing program is divided into two parts: pre-nursing and the professional major. Students start in the pre-nursing program and typically complete two to three years of prerequisite work as a pre-nursing student before they are eligible to apply to the professional major. The professional major, if admitted, is two years.
Admission to the Professional Major
Our professional major is a competitive program, which means students must apply to the major, and admission is not guaranteed. At UW-Parkside, we admit 40 students to the professional major every Fall.
For admission to the professional major, a committee completes a holistic review of your academics, work, volunteer, and leadership experiences. There is no required number of hours for volunteer work, however, it is required and considered when reviewing students for admission. Following the initial academic review, eligible students are invited to complete a series of short interviews and write an essay.

Meet with an advisor to determine when you should apply to the professional nursing major.
Applications for the Professional Major are accepted early November-January 2.
PREREQUISITES
- Completion of preparatory coursework based on placement test scores
- Math Competency (Placement score of 30+ or Math 111 with “C” or higher)

ELIGIBILITY
- Must have at least a “C” (2.0) in each pre-nursing prerequisite course. Earning less than a “C” in a required course constitutes a “repeat.”
- No more than one repeat per required course.
- No more than 2 total repeats for required courses.
- Must complete required pre-nursing courses prior to start of professional major.
- Minimum Nursing GPA: 2.750 | Minimum Science GPA: 2.750
APPLICATION PROCESS
- Applications become available each November and are due by January 2 at 5 pm. This is a firm deadline for admission into the fall professional nursing program.
- Required prerequisite courses may be completed in the Spring and/or Summer semester(s) after an application is submitted, but must be completed with a C or higher in the intended semester by the start of the professional program and with eligible GPAs to maintain admission.

ACADEMIC ADVISING
To ensure eligibility, meet with the nursing academic advisor each semester before applying to the professional major.
The UW-Milwaukee/UW-Parkside Consortia baccalaureate degree program in nursing is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The program is also approved by the State of Wisconsin Board of Nursing.
