Field Museum Sustainability Officer Deepens Expertise
For Carter O’Brien, establishing himself in the sustainability world has been a winding journey dotted by moments of being in the right place at the right time with the right support. Along with his roles of sustainability officer at the Field Museum in Chicago, Carter is also enrolled in the online University of Wisconsin Master of Science in Sustainable Management program at UW-Parkside.
The Master of Science in Sustainable Management is a graduate degree program designed for students who already have a bachelor’s degree. The admissions requirements are as follows:

Application Deadlines
- For priority consideration, candidates should apply no later than two (2) weeks prior to the start of the semester they wish to begin.
- Student can enter the Masters program in Sustainable Management in the Fall, Spring, or Summer terms.
If you have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally or nationally accredited university and a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0, you may apply directly to the program. Students with a GPA of less than 3.0 may be considered for provisional admission but should speak with an adviser.
Interested students should complete an electronic application and submit official transcripts, a statement of up to 1,000 words, 2 letters of recommendation, and a resume.
Five University of Wisconsin System campuses – UW-Green Bay, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Parkside, UW-Stout Polytechnic, and UW-Superior – collaborate to offer this 14-course online sustainable management master’s program. Faculty members have developed a cutting-edge curriculum, combined with input from industry leaders, to ensure the program’s learning objectives are up to date and of value to future employers.

FACULTY HIGHLIGHT
John Skalbeck
Professor of Geosciences
Dr. Skalbeck is a Professor of Geosciences and the Academic Director for the Master of Science in Sustainable Management program. He earned his B.A. in geology from Gustavus Adolphus College, M.S. in geology/geophysics from Western Washington University, and Ph.D. in hydrogeology from University of Nevada-Reno. Dr. Skalbeck spent over 10 years as a groundwater consultant specializing in soil and groundwater contamination and remediation. His current research includes modeling of gravity and magnetic data for hydrogeologic applications, wetlands characterization, and water quality of beaches.
Julie Kinzelman
Associate Lecturer in the Center for Environmental Studies
Dr. Julie Kinzelman joined the UW-Parkside faculty in 2007. She has a B.S. in Medical Technology from UW-Parkside, a Supervisory Management certificate and M.S. in Health (Clinical Laboratory Sciences) from UW-Milwaukee, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Microbiology/Public Health from the University of Surrey, Guildford, United Kingdom. In addition to teaching, she is the director of the City of Racine Public Health Department Laboratory (Racine, WI) where she conducts an active research program; working with local, state, and federal agencies to find applied science solutions to improve water quality, protect public health, create coastal resilience and restore natural habitat/utility.
