Computer Science Minor

Parkside’s computer science minor is designed for students of any discipline who want to gain more than a cursory understanding of computers and how they work.

The computer science minor particularly complements majors in management information systems (MIS), graphic design, bioinformatics and molecular biology, mathematics, and physics.

As a computer science minor, you’ll discover courses that provide a background in the software, hardware, and mathematical foundations necessary to understand and participate in advanced work. Practical experience and programming form a substantial portion of each course.

Computer Science I | CSCI 241 | 5 credits
Introduces the fundamentals of software development; including software classes, objects, logic, selection control, repetition control, subprograms, parameter passage, and rudimentary software engineering techniques.

Computer Science II | CSCI 242 | 4 credits
Explores object-oriented programming concepts including inheritance and polymorphism; recursion. Introduces data structures including: lists, stacks, queues, trees and maps; advanced sorting and searching algorithms.

Discrete Mathematics | CSCI/MATH 231 | 3 credits
Sets; the number system; Boolean algebra; formal logic and proofs; relations and functions; combinatorics and recurrence relations; graphs and trees.

The computer science program is based on ACM.IEEE internationally recognized guidelines for Computer Science. This means that our courses contain rigorous content. It also means that students can easily transfer to our program from other universities. Our undergraduate program is highly respected in the region with approximately 99% of our graduates employed in professional positions or furthering their education in graduate school.
