The University of Wisconsin-Parkside recognizes and honors the cultural diversity that our students and community bring to our campus. Hispanic Heritage Month is nationally recognized for September 15-October 15 and aligns with independence days of many Latin American countries. We honor and recognize the history, culture, and achievements of Hispanic/Latin Americans. Hispanic Heritage Month allows us to come together and celebrate our cultural intricacies via the arts, social connections, music, cultural awareness, and various sessions we offer.

Hispanic Heritage Month Library Collection
SEP 15-OCT 15 | UW-PARKSIDE LIBRARY
The UW-Parkside Library celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with a curated Hispanic Heritage Month collection that presents notable Latina/o/e/x authors and artists including works of nonfiction, fiction,anthologies, poetry, DVDs, CDs, and even graphic novels! These items are available for checkout with a Ranger Card or photo ID. You can also view the Hispanic and Latino/a/x Voices online collection that is continuously updated.
Additionally, you can utilize Mango Languages, a free program for all currently enrolled students or employees at UW-Parkside. Spanish, French, Portuguese, Dutch, and Haitian Creole are all available for learners.

Latinos Unidos (LU) Weekly Meetings
With the intent to establish a community of support where students can share unique educational experiences, LU aims to provide cultural education and social function to the community. They are devoted to developing a sense of pride among students toward diverse Latino heritage. Not Latinx, not a problem. Everyone is welcome to join LU and explore Latinx cultures. Check out LU’s weekly meetings!
Weekly meetings will be Mondays from 12 PM-1 PM in the Walnut Room (Student Center) .

David Ruiz has worked at AbbVie for two years and started out in the BTS Development Program. David started his experience in the program as a Business Systems Analyst in Operations, then migrated to OUS Commercial as a Data Visualization Analyst, and then ended the program working on the cybersecurity team as a Cyber Threat Intel Analyst. He now works in the EHS space in Operations and works on maintaining applications and systems used by our EHS professionals. David graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a degree in Information Decision Sciences.
Evelyn Torres is a Business Systems Analyst (BSA) working in Business Technology Solutions – Information Research under the Regulatory Affairs (RA) domain. Evelyn graduated with a degree in Political Science and minor in Business from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She comes from working at the AbbVie Innovation Center for about a year and a half during her time at the University of Illinois. Prior to her full-time role as a BSA in RA, Evelyn did some Business Analyst work for a period as a contractor with a different group within AbbVie. Evelyn’s prime responsibilities as a BSA involve helping business process through requirement gathering, documentation gathering, and assessments/developments.
Katherine Lopez is an experienced research biologist and Information Science professional with experience in drug discovery and corporate libraries. Katherine is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign with a BS in Biology and Syracuse University with a MS in Library and Information Science. Katherine leads a team of Business Systems Analysts in Abbvie’s BTS-IR Global Therapeutics Platform Solutions group. This team provides innovative technology solutions for the global Chemical Manufacturing Control (CMC) and Clinical Drug Supply Manufacturing (CDSM) groups in R&D. Together we are transforming Abbvie’s scientific data making digitization our priority.
MOSAIC Workshop: El Pueblo Unido

This workshop will look to the ways various latinidad movements collectivized the power of the people, worked for and generated change throughout their various movements, and will link some of the hidden figures and communities within these struggles both historically and in some cases presently.

Latinx-Owned Mini Mercado – POSTPONED TO NOVEMBER
NOV | 11 AM-2 PM | The Bridge
Mercados (markets) are large areas in a city where you can get different items like food, clothing, jewelry, and other goods at a fair price. Since the times of the indigenous tribes in Latin America, markets have been a way to get new items and a way to grow a strong relationship with different people. Stop by this mini mercado with a range of items that will be sold such as plants, baked goods and sweets, clothing, collectibles and much more!
