Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest; it is designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and to encourage people to read for pleasure and enrichment. The book chosen for 2014 Big Read was Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. Free copies of the book will be available at a variety of partnering locations throughout the event which starts September 22 and continues through October 24. Events such as speakers, book discussions, films, art, and more will be happening throughout the event.
Book distribution begins Wednesday, September 17th. Free copies of Fahrenheit 451 will be available at the following locations:
All total, 1900 copies of Fahrenheit 451 in English are available on a first come basis. 200 copies of the Spanish translation of Fahrenheit 451 are available. 500 copies of Tim Hamilton's graphic novel adaptation of Fahrenheit 451 will be available. Download a copy of the NEW Reader's Guide.
The Mathis Gallery will display Tim Hamilton's original artwork from the graphic novel Fahrenheit 451. This graphic novel was authorized by Ray Bradbury and was nominated for an Eisner award in the "Best Adaptation of Another Work" category. Meet Tim Hamilton and pick up a free Big Read copy of his graphic novel during our gallery opening.
Many community partners have come together to help make Big Read a success. They are offering unique programming throughout the Kenosha and Racine areas during the event. Check out our list of partners and their sites for more information about their involvement in Big Read.
Public Craft Brewing Company and Rustic Road Brewing Company in Kenosha have created special brews to celebrate Fahrenheit 451 and Big Read.
Restaurants and taverns throughout Kenosha and Racine are offering $4.51 drink and appetizer specials during Big Read. Keep checking back for new participants.
