A Fun, Hands-On Evening Exploring Artificial Intelligence Through Minecraft Education

Hour of AIKenosha, WI — The University of Wisconsin–Parkside’s Parkside Works, in partnership with Microsoft TechSpark and Code.org, is excited to host a regional Hour of AI event on Thursday, Dec. 11, from 5:30–7:30 p.m. The event will be held in UW–Parkside’s Library Learning Center (Rooms L140 & L141)
and parking will be available in the Rita Parking Lot B (Enter Rita – Building 2 on Map). This event is free and open to the public and media, but registration is required.

This interactive experience invites middle school students and their families to campus to explore the world of artificial intelligence through Minecraft Education: The First Night—a thrilling adventure where students team up with an AI Agent to gather resources, craft tools, and build shelter before nightfall.

Students will engage in coding puzzles using Microsoft’s MakeCode blocks or Python, learn how AI models work, and discover why human oversight is essential when using artificial intelligence. No prior experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to problem-solve and explore.

The experience will take place inside UW–Parkside’s vibrant and modern Library Learning Center, utilizing two computer labs, interactive screens, and creative breakout spaces including the Whisker Wonderland holiday pet photo gallery and student project showcases. Families will also enjoy kid-friendly refreshments, fun activity spaces, and a special appearance by Ranger Bear.

“AI literacy is becoming a foundational skill, and we want young learners to experience it in a way that is fun, hands-on, and accessible,” said Steve Donovan, Executive Director of Parkside Works. “This event brings together industry leaders, schools, libraries, parents, and our community to help students see themselves as creators—not just consumers—of emerging technologies.”

Participants include Microsoft, area school districts, libraries, youth organizations, and homeschool families. The event will include volunteers from UW–Parkside, the Library, Microsoft, teacher education programs, and UW-Parkside CTS staff.
