UW-Parkside Hosts 29th National Print Exhibition

Published: August 20, 2025

Doug DeVinnyKenosha, Wis.- 2025 marks the 29th presentation of the Parkside National Print Exhibition (PNPE), thirty-eight years since the first show opened at UW-Parkside. For almost four decades, the PNPE has shown some of the finest examples of original prints from artists nationwide.

The exhibition will take place Aug. 19 through Nov. 21, including a public reception, announcement of awards, and juror’s remarks on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 4-6 p.m. in the Emile H. Mathis Gallery. A full-color catalog will accompany this exhibition. This year, the exhibition will feature a Doug DeVinny Memorial Award.

The DeVinny Family commented on the exhibition, “Doug DeVinny, professor emeritus at UW-Parkside, founded the ‘Parkside National Small Print Exhibition’ in 1987. Now, the “Parkside National Print Exhibition” serves as one of the longest-running competitive print exhibitions in the Midwest."

“Doug’s intent in founding the print show was to educate students and the community about the art of printmaking while simultaneously forging a national community of printmakers. Doug designed a judging process by which jurors of national merit from all over the United States came to campus to select the pieces for the show.”

"The resulting exhibition is one of Doug’s lasting legacies. Doug taught printmaking at Parkside for nearly thirty years. Many of Doug’s students were juried into the national print show at their alma mater. Doug passed away on January 4, 2025. He is dearly missed by countless former students, colleagues, and the southeastern Wisconsin art community. His family is presenting the Doug DeVinny Memorial Award in his memory.”

The juror is Nathaniel Russell, a printmaker and artist. Russell was born and raised in Indiana. After college, Russell spent several years in the San Francisco Bay Area making posters, record covers, and woodcuts. He returned to his home city of Indianapolis and now spends his time creating drawings, fake fliers, bad sculptures, wood shapes, and music.

Russell’s work is regularly shown around the world in both traditional galleries and informal spaces, usually surrounded by an expanding list of friends, collaborators, and like-minded folk. He frequently returns to his second home of California to work with friends on projects as varied as murals, print workshops, and backyard musical performances. Nathanielrussell.com. Russell will discuss his own work at the Juror talk on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m. in Bedford Hall.

The Emile H. Mathis Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, visit https://www.uwp.edu/therita/artgalleries.cfm or contact Mathis Gallery at matthes@uwp.edu
