How to connect to the Internet via ResNet

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside, through the Office of Housing and Residence Life, provides network connection services in student rooms, apartments, suites and other university-owned housing facilities.

Use of ResNet is a privilege, and it is the responsibility of each user to utilize these services appropriately. Violation of any policies may result in immediate disconnection from the network, student conduct sanctions, and/or monetary fines and criminal sanctions from local, state or federal authorities.
Ranger Hall and Pike River Suites offer both wired and wireless connectivity. Wired is the preferred connection while in your room, while wireless is primarily designed for the common areas. The University Apartments are completely wireless. Although we have tried to maximize wireless coverage, due to furniture placement, building construction and the nature of wireless, some areas (even within 2-3 feet) may have very different signal strengths.

Wired connections:

Ranger Hall and Pike River Suites (preferred method where available)

To make a connection, you will need to have an Ethernet cable and compatible port on your device. Plug the network cable into both the red jack (do not plug into the white jack) on the wall and the network port on your device.
Note: Cat5 is the minimum standard for a cable, Cat5e and Cat6 are acceptable alternatives for your network cable and are available for purchase at the bookstore.

Wireless connections:

To connect to the wireless network in Residence Life (and on campus), your device must be equipped with a wireless network card. To make the initial connection you will need to have the following information:

SSID: UWP-ResNet (in the residence halls) or eduroam (on the main campus)

Configuration & Internet Connection:

To make a connection to ResNet, your computer must have DHCP enabled. This is turned on by default.

Logging on to ResNet:

After connecting to ResNet, if a page does not auto open, please open your preferred browser, and follow the instructions on the screen. If your homepage is 'blank' or is a long address, please try to visit https://www.uwp.edu/. When you have completed the usage agreement, you will be required to register your device. After you have registered your device, please reboot the device. Once rebooted, open a browser and you will be asked to enter your username and password. You will only be required to enter this information again if your device disconnects/leaves ResNet for more than about 5 minutes.

To manually register a device, such as a gaming console, please visit https://packetfence.resnet.uwp.edu/status and login with your UWP credentials. Here you can see all your registered devices that can connect to ResNet. Click ‘Register another device’. You will need to know the device’s MAC address; enter it here then click ‘Register’.

Important Notes:

* If you notice wireless connection issues, especially after traveling through campus, it is strongly recommended that you turn off your wireless, then turn it back on again. If you are connected to an access point that isn’t the closest one available (from moving around campus), there can appear to be a weak or no signal, and it may appear as if ResNet is not working properly. Turing your wireless connection off, then on again should help. Finally, take note that the more devices connected to a single access point, the slower the connection can be, which is one reason why wired connections are recommended, if available.

* Your device MUST have a browser (Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari, Mozilla, etc.) to connect to ResNet, without manually registering the device.

* Some devices are not permitted on the campus network, as they result in causing interference with campus access points, resulting in degraded connections for other residences. These devices include, but are not limited to: wireless printers (local connection should be used), wireless routers and extenders, hubs, switches, smart home devices (Echo, Nest, Sonos, Smart Plugs, etc), and devices with Cast features (Chromecast, some SmartTVs, etc.).
* Gaming devices are allowed, but some features could be limited due to NAT type because of network security reasons, and cannot be modified.

* The account that devices are registered under will be held responsible for activity of that device.
