Bill Miller serves as an Associate Professor of Sport Management and Department Chair in the Health, Kinesiology & Sport Management Department at UW-Parkside.
Professor Miller is a former Chairperson for the State Bar of Wisconsin’s Sports and Entertainment Law Section and currently serves as a Member of the Board of Directors. He is also a member of the Sports Lawyers Association (SLA), Sports Marketing Association (SMA), Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) and the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM).
Miller has been a multi-time nominee for the campus-wide Stella M. Gray Teaching Award along with being a nominee for the faculty advising award during his time at UW-Parkside.
Professor Miller is a graduate of Marquette University Law School. In 2002, he was named the first-ever recipient of the “Sports Law Alumnus of the Year” award from the National Sports Law Institute of Marquette University Law School in honor of his career accomplishments and service to the sports law program. Since 2011, he has served as a member of the National Sports Law Institute of Marquette University’s Board of Advisors.
Miller completed his undergraduate work at Ripon College from which he received a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in Politics and Government along with minors in Law and Society and History. In 2002, he was named the recipient of Ripon College’s “Outstanding Young Alumni” award. From 2006 to 2012, he was a member of the Ripon College Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Teaching, Research/Creative & Consulting Interests
Teaching Interests
Professor Miller teaches courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels in the sport management program at UWP. His courses typically focus on revenue generation and sports law issues with Sport Business & Finance (undergrad), The Business of Minor League Baseball (undergrad), Current Issues in Sport Management (graduate), Financial Management for Sports Organizations (graduate) and Revenue Generation and Sales in Sports Organizations (graduate) among his frequent class offerings at the university.
In 2009, Bill developed a course focusing solely on green facility development, finance and marketing issues for sports organizations. The course entitled Sustainable Sport Management was believed to be one of the first (if not the first) of its kind in the country.
Research Interests
One of Professor Miller's main areas of research focus throughout his career has been sports and entertainment facility naming rights. He has consulted with facilities and sponsors in naming rights negotiations and also authored two books on the subject, Facility Naming Rights and Naming Rights Deals.
In addition to his teaching and consulting work, Bill was the co-author (with Professor Paul Anderson) of Major League Leases, a book devoted solely to the issues surrounding the negotiation of major league stadium and arena lease agreements. His other writings have been featured in Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal, and Stadia along with numerous other law-related publications and journals.
Miller has also been quoted in over 40 publications discussing sports ownership and facility development issues including Barron’s, The Boston Globe, The Chicago Tribune, ESPN.com, Los Angeles Times, Milwaukee Magazine, Street and Smith’s Sports Business Journal and The Wall Street Journal. He has also appeared on CNN and other broadcast outlets to discuss sports team ownership and facility development issues.
