The University of Wisconsin-Parkside invites applications for the position of 2nd Shift Facilities Repair Worker Advanced.

This position provides maintenance, repairs and upkeep to the campus facilities and grounds. The position inspects, maintains, adjusts and repairs a wide variety of interior and exterior building components, furniture and equipment. The position provides support and assists with basic mechanical repairs and maintenance along with custodial, grounds and security functions. The position requires the ability to work independently and in conjunction and cooperation with others. Incumbent will normally work 2nd shift with the ability to work 1st shift in the summer months.


Essential Job Functions

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Maintenance of buildings facilities and structures

  • Re-lamping light fixtures and coordinating with the supervisor for the replacement of defective lamp ends, ballasts and other noted electrical problems.
  • Installation, repair, and replacement of miscellaneous furnishings, i.e. Blackboards, pencil sharpeners, projection screens, mini-blinds, coat racks, paintings, fire extinguishers, etc.
  • Repair/maintain restroom furnishings, i.e., wall partitions, trash, towel, soap, and napkin dispenser, mirrors, metal access doors, toilet tissue rollers, etc.
  • Install vision lights and ventilation grills in metal and wooden doors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Maintenance of buildings interior

  • Repair floor materials including vinyl tile, carpet, ceramic tile brick pavers, etc.
  • Install or remove walls, partitions (including drywall taping and finishing, doors and windows.

Maintenance of minor building alterations or projects

  • Erect metal studs for drywall construction, partitions, ceilings, etc.
  • Pour and finish concrete floors, walkways, ramps and parking areas.
  • Masonry brick and block work including foundations, walls, etc.

Maintenance of buildings’ envelope

  • Repairs to building foundations including; concrete, masonry, footing repair, sealing leaks, etc.
  • Maintenance of exterior walls including; repair of masonry, windows, doors, metal and wood siding, etc.
  • Repair of roof systems, including skylights, roof membranes, flashings, etc.

Operation of hand and power tools necessary to achieve aforementioned tasks

  • Operate all hand and power tools as required of the project, in a skilled and safe manner.
  • Equipment to be used on the job: (F-Frequently, O-Occasionally, R-Rarely)

Tools:

F - Drill, hammer, screw gun, sign making equipment

O – Circular saw, table saw, hammer drill, router, radial arm saw, air compressors and related air tools

R – Chisels, wrenches, jack hammers

Large Machinery (includes vehicles):

O – Drill press, band saw, wood shaper, planer, jointer

R – Lathes, metal brake and shear, high lift truck, welder, road marking equipment, generators

Electrical Equipment:

O – Lamp tester

R – Fax

Chemicals:

Paints, stains, solvents, lubricants, varnishes, epoxies and basic cleaning materials.

  • Perform operator checks and maintenance on such tools.
  • Clean and secure tools and equipment.

Performance of other duties

Maintain records and reports as required

Maintain shop and work areas in a clean, organized, and safe order

Provide instruction to other employees as necessary

Snowplowing of grounds, as needed.

Set-up for Commencement and other special events.

Essential Knowledge And Abilities

  • Requires the performance of duties under adverse conditions; working below grade, and from elevated or uneven surfaces. 
  • Perform interior and exterior building repairs, including roofing, masonry, painting, patching and window glazing. 
  • Knowledge and ability to operate hand and power tools, make and install signs on campus, maintain records.
  •  Aptitude and inclination to recognize and work with mechanical, physical, and spatial relationships and concepts. 
  • Knowledge of the proper uses of and techniques for using the tools and materials of building repair and construction. 
  • Knowledge of the properties and characteristics of various types of wood and other materials used in building and grounds facilities. 
  • Willingness to accept direction and supervision, to do things in the prescribed manner.
  • Responsible for Money, University Funds or Accounts which hold financial information?

Yes, may occasionally buy supplies under $100.00.

Ergonomic Requirements:

Climb ladders; traverse planks or walkways; extensive standing for long periods of time; extensive walking to and from various areas of the campus; reaching required for higher work; squatting, twisting, bending, and kneeling; frequent lifting of heavy objects (50-100lbs); adequate balance and stability to accomplish noted tasks.

Education, Experience, Training And/or Certifications

Required

  • High school education, equivalent GED, and/or 3 years of experience in construction or building maintenance.
  • At least one year of the experience must have involved a variety of complex and difficult repair or construction work on a variety of areas in the remodeling or repair of buildings structures and structural components

Preferred

  • Acquire and maintain a valid Driver’s License within 3 months of hire date.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to climb ladders, scaffolding and rooftop access stairs. Required to carry tools and parts often weighing 50 pounds or more. Uses ropes and pulleys to hoist tools and parts to installation elevations. Service work involves crawling on, under and inside of air handling ducts which are often dirty and dusty. Worker must be able to utilize hand tools, power tools and equipment while maintaining a safe environment for himself and others in the area. Proper and safe tool utilization requires dexterity and mobility of hands and arms.
