Position Title: Assistant Professor of Economics

Employment Type: Full Faculty

Reports To: The Assistant Professor of Economics will report to Economics Department Chair, the Associate Dean and Dean of CBEC


Essential Job Functions

The primary purpose of this tenure track assistant professor position is to 1) teach undergraduate courses (specifically, courses in economics principles, macroeconomics, monetary and financial economics, and international economics), 2) engage in economics research and scholarly activity, and 3) provide service to the Economics Department, the College of Business, Economics, and Computing, the University, the community, and the economics profession.

Responsibilities

  • Teach economics courses in face-to-face and online formats (courses include a one-semester economics principles survey course, principles of microeconomics, principles of macroeconomics, intermediate macro theory, money and banking, financial institutions and markets, international economics, or other upper–level undergraduate courses as assigned by the department chair).
  • Schedule and hold regular office hours.
  • Conduct course assessments, provide student feedback, and assign student course grades.
  • Mentor economics students.
  • Conduct research and engage in scholarly work (publish in economics journals and present research at conferences).
  • Provide service to the Economics Department, the College of Business, Economics, and Computing, the University, the community, and the economics profession.
  • Attend departmental meetings and participate in department activities and events.
Qualifications

Essential Knowledge And Abilities

  • Knowledge and ability to teach undergraduate online and face-to-face economics courses in a traditional university classroom equipped with a chalkboard/whiteboard and multimedia technology
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff verbally,in writing, and electronically (such as through email, Zoom, Webex, FaceTime, or other digital technologies)
  • Ability to conduct 53-minute and 82-minute class sessions
  • Ability to use learning management software (e.g., Canvas, D2L/BrightSpace, or Blackboard)
  • Ability to use other course content development tools and resources (software and hardware)
  • Knowledge and ability to conduct economic research and scholarly activities
  • Ability to work in an office and meet with individual students
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work while being responsive to Departmental and University needs
  • Ergonomic requirements: sufficient mobility and dexterity to move around office, campus, and community; ability to work with a laptop computer; and, ability to attend meetings, workshops, seminars, and conferences
  • Equipment to be used on the job: laptop computer; printer; photocopier; classroom multimedia technology (e.g., data projector); and, communication technologies (e.g., telephone/voicemail)

Qualifications

Education, Experience, Training And/or Certifications

Required

  • Ph.D. in economics or a Ph.D. candidate in economics, i.e., “all but dissertation” (ABD) (ABD candidates will be considered; however, contract renewal will be contingent on completing degree within one year of date of hire.)
  • Experience teaching undergraduate economics courses
  • Research and scholarly activity
  • Experience with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, D2L/BrightSpace, or Blackboard)
