Position Title: Assistant Professor

Employment Type: Full time, Faculty, Salaried

Reports To: The Assistant Professor of Critical Corporate Communication will report to the Chair of the Communication department.

Pay Range: $55,000 - $58,000 (commensurate with experience).

Essential Job Functions

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside’s Communication Department is seeking to hire an Assistant Professor of Critical Corporate Communication. The position requires a Ph.D. in Communication who can teach courses in any one or more of the following areas: health communication, conflict analysis and resolution, organizational communication, or public relations.

The ideal candidate will be able to teach lower and upper-level Communication courses (e.g., intro to communication, intro to media studies, intro to conflict analysis, public relations, practicum in pr/org comm, and internship) beginning in August 2023. The candidate will also be able to contribute to the development of one or more additional areas in the department including: crisis communication, public relations, event planning and execution, at the undergraduate and graduate level. Our department is committed to preparing students for 21st Century careers and places a high value on issues of social justice and diversity as well as service-learning and online teaching and so seeks a colleague who can contribute to those emphases. The primary responsibility of the position is teaching undergraduate and graduate students (typical credit load for faculty members is 24-credits). Faculty are also expected to engage in scholarship through research publication and to perform appropriate department, college, and university service.

Key Job Responsibilities

Tenure-track faculty positions require that the majority of time be spent in activities such as:


  • Teach 24-credits per academic year for college undergraduate and graduate students
  • Teaching online for the Graduate Program
  •  Perform associated responsibilities such as class preparation and assessment of student learning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Conduct scholarly research leading to publication in scholarly, peer-reviewed outlets relevant to the Communication discipline
  • Participate in academic conferences through presentations, reviewing, chairing, or responding to papers and panels.


  • Provide service to the department, college, university, discipline, and community

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

  • Teach college-level courses in specified areas, attend department meetings and take part in certain University, College, and department-related events (e.g., selection of scholarship recipients, celebration of student accomplishments, theatre/art/music presentations, graduation ceremonies).
  • Candidate will be expected to possess and apply academic knowledge that is at the doctoral level.
  • Candidate will be expected to be familiar/proficient with computer technology, including software programs such as MS-Word
  • Candidate will be expected to have experience teaching online, building online courses, hybrid courses, and in-person courses
  • Candidate must be willing to learn Canvas Learning Management System or have LMS experience in general 
  • This position does not involve responsibility for money, university funds or accounts which hold financial information.
  • Ergonomic Requirements: The position will involve standing or sitting for long periods of time at a desk and doing work at a computer.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. from an accredited program in Communication or related field at time of employment (No ABDs accepted)
  • Coursework, scholarship, and/or teaching experience in corporate or professional communication.
  • Ability to contribute to one or more of the following areas: Public Relations, Organizational Communication, Conflict Resolution and Analysis, or Health Communication
  • Ability to contribute to program emphases in social justice, diversity, community-based learning and/or online instruction
  • The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of one year’s teaching experience at the college level with evidence of teaching effectiveness and course development.
