Position Title: Dean

Employment Type: Full Time, Limited Appointment, Salaried

Reports To: The Dean of the College of Business, Economics, and Computing will report to the Provost/Vice Chancellor.

Pay Range: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside serves approximately 4,300 undergraduate and graduate students and offers over 51 undergraduate majors, 87 minors / certificates, and 16 graduate degrees. The university is structured with four academic colleges: Arts & Humanities; Business, Economics & Computing; Natural & Health Sciences; and Social Sciences & Professional Studies. The campus community is comprised of 186 full-time faculty and lecturers and 272 full-time staff.

 

Role of the Dean of the College of Business, Economics, and Computing

The Dean is the academic leader and chief administrator for the College reporting directly to the Provost. The Dean is expected to provide leadership and support for strategic planning, budget planning and development, program review and accreditation, faculty and staff development, instructional innovation, research, advisory board initiatives, and community engagement. Leadership across the university is also expected through commitment to the university’s strategic initiatives. The successful candidate will bring a coherent vision for the College of Business, Economics, and Computing (CBEC) in a university committed to the integration of the liberal arts, sciences, and professional education.

About the College of Business, Economics, and Computing (CBEC)

 The College of Business, Economics, and Computing has three departments: Business; Computer Science; and, Economics.  Thirty-one full-time equivalent faculty and lecturers in these three departments serve about 1,000 majors. The Business Department offers the Bachelor of Science in Accounting, Business Management, Marketing, Management Information Systems, a competency-based undergraduate Flex Business Administration program, and a large MBA program. Other large disciplines offered by the Business Department include Finance and Human Resources. The Computer Science Department offers the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, and the Master of Science in Computer and Information Systems (MSCIS).  Business faculty work collaboratively with Computer Science to teach some courses.  The Economics Department offers the Bachelor of Arts in Economics. All three departments offer a number of minors and certificate programs, and have many significant achievements. The Business programs are all fully accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB, International).

The college is engaged in an extensive array of partnership activities with businesses and not-for-profit organizations in the region. These include the App Factory where students develop mobile apps for clients; the Solutions for Economic Growth Center through which students, faculty, and businesses collaborate on projects for regional organizations; and a Small Business Development Center. In addition, the college has strong ties to international educational and business institutions in several countries through exchange and study abroad programs.

Essential Job Functions

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Planning
    • The dean will be responsible for leading the college’s efforts to serve more students and improve student success, especially among historically underserved populations.
    • The dean will be responsible for implementing the college’s strategic plan and will lead the college in the recruitment, retention and graduation of students who are well-prepared for success in graduate school or professional careers.
    • The dean will develop and support program and student assessment that is data driven and supports the academic endeavors of the college.
    • The dean will provide leadership and support for program accreditation/reaccreditation efforts in the college, particularly the AACSB, International accreditation.
  • Budget
    • The dean will be responsible for the efficient and effective administrative and fiscal management of the college, working in a context of integrated budgeting, planning, and evidence-based decision-making.
  • Personnel
    • The dean will be responsible for recruiting, retaining and supporting a diverse and outstanding faculty and staff, and for providing appropriate support for faculty and staff to achieve their professional development goals.
  • Leadership
    • Working within a framework of shared governance, the dean must have the imagination, initiative, and commitment to pursue new opportunities for the college, including the development of new undergraduate and graduate degree programs. 
    • The dean must be committed to advancing the goals and objectives of the CBEC departments, the college, and the university as well as fostering collaborations across the campus.
    • The dean must have a demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary teaching and learning and to fostering and rewarding collaborations in teaching, learning, research, scholarship and creative activity.
    • The dean must be committed to strengthening equity, diversity, and inclusion in the college’s culture.
  • Outreach
    • The dean must be able to articulate to campus and external constituents the enduring value of education in business, computer science, and economics, and must be able to advocate for the needs and advance the goals of the college while working collaboratively with other leaders across campus.
    • The dean must be able to work effectively with the CBEC advisory board.
  • Fundraising
    • The dean will be responsible for effectively representing the college to the campus, external communities, and alumni, and will provide leadership in the pursuit of external resources to support the goals of the college.
    • The dean will work with internal and external constituents to successfully increase fundraising.

  • Thorough understanding of and commitment to the mission of a regional state institution as student-centered and engaged in the communities that we serve such as first-generation and minority students.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree in business, computer science, economics, or a related field.
  • Distinguished record of teaching and scholarly achievement meriting appointment with tenure at the rank of full professor.
  • Administrative abilities demonstrated through a minimum of five years’ service as a dean, associate or assistant dean, chair of an academic department, or comparable administrative position.
  • Demonstrated experience with AACSB accreditation for large business programs in the college.

 

Although not required, the ideal candidate will possess one or more of the following professional qualifications and personal qualities:

  • Demonstrated success with enrollment growth and management at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Strong commitment to breadth of disciplines in the college.
  • Effective interpersonal, organizational, communication and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated success with AACSB accreditation.
  • Demonstrated record of successful fiscal management, including budgeting.
  • Demonstrated record of successful fund-raising.
  • Demonstrated success in community engagement.
  • Demonstrated success in attracting and retaining faculty & students from underrepresented groups.
  • Demonstrated experience with alternative delivery methods, especially with online programs and education.
  • Demonstrated success in driving educational strategy in the programs offered by the college, including new program development.
  • Demonstrated commitment and success in developing, implementing, and sustaining collaborative international and interdisciplinary programs.
  • Demonstrated leadership in generating and sustaining effective relationships with business and community leaders.
  • Commitment to effective decision-making in the context of shared governance.
